Supplements?

I was doing great. Four weeks in and down 11 lbs and feeling better than I have in decades. I had been taking Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with 12 ounces of water every day but the acid was really bothering me, so I switched to capsules. The same day I added 1000 mgs of Vitamon C, 50 mgs of Zinc and and 125 mcg’s of Vitamin D3 and I’ve been out of ketosis for two full days! I’m starting to panic. I didn’t do or change anything else. Could one of these thing have such a profound effect?

Secondly, I’m reading that many of your but butter in coffee. Are you talking like a tablespoon of real butter or something else? Does this have the same effect as MCT Oil?

Lastly: THANK YOU to all the “oldies” who are showing us Newbies what all these acronyms! I’d be lost without the explanations!

I find it odd that vitamin or mineral supplements would affect ketosis but have no science and could be wrong.

You’re losing! How are you “out of ketosis” reading from strips? Have you changed what you’re eating? Staying under 20 carbs? Getting enough fat?

The strips have gone beige and I didn’t have the energy I’ve had. Could it just be an “off” day. I guess I’ve still got a lot to learn and LOTS of topics to read here.

There can be sugars/starches in some vitamins and supplements. Not sure it would be enough to knock you out on it’s own, but if you’re pushing your personal carb tolerance, it could be a contributing factor.

I’ve been staying around grams of carbs 10 a day. Thanks much for the input.

If you are testing ketones with strips, and showing lower or no ketone numbers, that doesn’t mean being out of ketosis. Your body (liver) has produced an amount of ketones and are using them. Early on in the first few days, weeks, a higher amount of ketones would be produced, and excess ( not being used) shows in the urine. excess amount of ketones is not being filtered out into the urine and shown. (Tested). In other words, your adapting to ketosis.

Great point. There’s a huge difference between registering low and nothing. Just because you tested at higher levels previously doesn’t mean anything’s wrong when you test low. As @Scott_Burnham said, as your system adjusts, you won’t have as many “extra” keytones which is all the pee sticks pick up. About all they are good for is establishing of there are keytones at all. If it’s registering anything, you’re all good. Don’t worry about the number.

Even at that, if you’re well hydrated, it could measure lower or not at all. If it’s something you’re really concerned about tracking, it might be worth picking up a blood keytone meter.

That makes such perfect sense! Thanks so much!

Strips are a bit useless. You are just not wasting ketones. Are there sugary fillers in your capsules??

It’s not unusual for those following a Keto dit to put ~ 1 tablespoon of real (unsalted) butter in their coffee (the exact amount is up to your taste). The butter consists of saturated fat (the type your body likes over other types of fats). Some people tend toward butter from grass fed cows (i.e. Kerry Gold or similar) to increase the amount of Omega 3 oil in they consume. (Butter produced from non-grass fed cows contains a lower amount of Omega 3 oils.)

Butter is not the same as MCT oil insomuch as the two types of oils are digested differently in the body. MCT oil is quickly converted into ketones in the blood, whereas the oils in butter are processed more slowly in different processes. My interpretation is the combo of both the butter and MCT oils gives both a quick (from the MCT oil) and long duration (from the butter) energy supply to the body.
