Sunflower seeds

(German Ketonian) #1

Hi everyone,

I know that sunflower seeds usually seem to have quite a few carbs in them, so it makes them a non-ideal keto food and definitely inferior to macadamia nuts or pecans. But I just stumbled across this product in on of the “foreign country products” aisles in one of our local supermarkets:

These are roasted and salted sunflower seeds in the shell imported from Russia. Now, the nutritional info is where it gets interesting (per 100g):

kcals: 362
fat: 33.5 (saturated: 2)
net carbs: 2,16
sugars: 0
fiber: 5
protein: 13
salt: 1,1 (sodium: around 400mg)

Seems like the ideal keto food! I just inhaled 200grams; super delicious! My blood sugar remains it a constant 90 before and after eating them (t30: 91, t60: 87, t90: 84, t120: 86).

I am just curious whether this nutritional info actually can be true… seems to be too good to be true, especially compared to other sunflower seeds (even when compared to shelled seeds). Could it be a special kind of sunflower seed?

I am really curious to find out and I wonder whether you guys have some idea as to the reasons for those great nutritional stats.

I have a slight sunflower seed addiction. You will (or used to rather) almost never see me without a mouthful. I love the salt on them. My favorite brand is Davids original. The nutrition states:

1/4 cup or 30g kernels
Carbs: 5
Fiber: 2

Quite honestly, 30grams of just the kernels is a ton. I could easily get a few mouthfuls to equal that. With that said, I have stopped my every day eating of them as I did not realize they were high omega 6 fats. As I understand it, we probably get way too much omega 6 and not enough omega 3 and too much omega 6 can actually block the good 3. I might be totally off or I dreamt that but I do not indulge like I used to but still have them on a trip in the car on occasion.

Yeah, you see? Your nutritional info is so much more heavy on carbs than mine… I wonder whether the info on my package is accurate. On the other hand, I know that producers have to be accurate within a 5% error margin by law here in Germany.

It would be hard for me to imagine there is a huge different in sunflower seeds. the ingredients on my pack state sunflower seeds and salt.

I do see the following but that’s still a bit off from your pack:

Serving size 1/4 cup or 30g kernels
*Equates ti 1 1/4 cup in the shell (66g)

this is me. I order them by the box from Amazon. Never thought about the omega 6 content. I consume enough of them that this should be a concern. I do know they have no effect on my blood sugar though. :sunflower:

my husband hates this habot of mine. Funny thing tho…hadn’t seen my brother in a few years… (25 yrs in Air Force) and he and his family were visiting a few summers ago. We were at our construction site, both get out of our cars and we both have a mouthful of sunflower seeds. Nature or nurture? I’m going with nature on this one. His wife hates it too.

but I digress, sorry for the thread hijack.

Same!

I go for the Bigs Brand
Like the Dill Pickle!! Yummy

6g carb
3g fiber

Just yesterday ( at 7-11 ) discovered the Chile Limon flavor. Although not As tasty ( for me )

Ratio
4g carb
4g fiber
:flushed:

W that Ratio…I did email Bigs to get some clarification
Just curious
All the other do not have that Golden Keto Ratio

Why…did I email??
I have no bleeping idea. Lol
I’m still gonna eat any ways :joy:

I keep them in my vehicles so that when I get sleepy driving, I can crack them one at to help me stay awake. At the miniscule quantities I eat that way, the carb and caloric impact is insignificant.

David’s Cracked Pepper flavor is my favorite.
