Sugar questions

sugar

(Veronica Osoria) #1

Hello everyone! I need some opinions on sugar. Deli meats, bacon and so on state sugar on the ingredients, but in the nutrition facts its 0 sugar. What should I go by? My hubby is upset he thinks he cant have his sriracha because there is sugar in the recipe. I know there are foods there are bacon and deli meats that are zero sugar, but lets be honest I cannot afford all the time to pay 9.99 a lb at whole foods for no sugar bacon or ham  Thanks ahead for the help!

Some people are likely to be pretty militant about making sure that here’s no sugar in the ingredients. I tend to a compromise. The lower down on the list of ingredients, the better. I also use the total carbs per serving (the less the better) and make sure the amount I’m eating doesn’t take me over my 20 grams of net carbs for the day. So, I usually end up with some carbs in things like hot dogs, sausage, ham and the occasional serving of low carb ice cream, etc. I can live with that. If what I’m doing stops working for me, being more militant about eliminating those kinds of foods might be a ā€œtweakā€ I need to consider making.

I buy sugar free bacon at Walmart for like $4.99/lb so there’s no need to get screwed at whole paycheck. On the Sriracha if I remember it’s like 1g? I personally wouldn’t worry about that…unless he’s drinking half a bottle at each meal. It’s always best when starting out to be pretty strict to get your body used to eating this way, but don’t go insane over 1g. For many years during all my bigger losses I always bought normal bacon that had the sugar curing and it was never an issue. You can always check blood sugar levels to see if it’s creating a noticeable response, but unlikely it will.

Most hot sauces are just fine, I buy the roster sriracha and its fine.

Outside of the way it is cured there is always a little sugar in sausages, some are higher than others. I typically figure any one sausage at 1g, some like dukes are 2 to 1g. I buy my bacon at costco for 4 packages for $11 never had a issues. Costco is very keto friendly, great place to buy mayo, meats, and nuts.
Deli meats you have to be a little careful but it is mostly common sense, honey cured ham well that is a no go. Hams tend to be the worst from what I have seen.

Having a small amount of carbs through out the day is not going to do much to you, when start having 10g or more at one sitting then you will start to have issues. The 20g limit is low to keep people from spiking their insulin which is what you are trying to keep from happening.

I quit buying sriracha because even though the per serving carbs is negligible, the serving size is so small I have no idea of the sugar in a ā€œhot sauce lover’sā€ serving. It also tastes sweet to me now.

You can also just buy the chili sauce and add your own sweetener to taste.

Sugar!!!
I started keto diet a week ago. I am eating really simple meals…using butter, beef, cheese ans few vegetables. My only problem is i drink about two cups of tea everyday (or 4 some days) and i cant have tea without sugar. I am studying in Bulgaria and cant get stevia or other alternatives. I dont consume anyother carbs what so ever apart from sugar in tea and fibres from vegetables. Since i started the diet i have been feeling really lethargic and achy everywhere…i am wondering if i messed up by using sugar in tea ( i put about half a teaspoon in a cup of tea). Any advice about sugar consumption will be really appreciated. Can i continue consuming this much sugar…my weight has been fluctuating between 57 and 58 kg since i started …but its only been a week

Thank you guys for the response. With all that being said, should I just focus on what the nutrition label reads or make sure that the ingredients of an item do not have any type of sugar?

I don’t stress over sugar in the list. I go by the carb count. One good tip tho is to count every zero carb serving as one gram of carbs so 0g for a tbsp of heavy whipping cream and I have 2 tbs, I count that as 2g. I don’t remember but someone else here will know what the max amount of carbs is a food can have and still be able to say 0g. Also watch the serving sizes. We know they can be ridiculous so be careful. Going by the zero=1 rule, if I made chocolate mousse with my heavy cream and ate the bowl, I’d be pushing my daily intake.

Thank you @cwemmons this should help me some.

Just to be clear
1 cup of HWC has .26g of sugar and 6.64g of total carbs.

I consume one cup a day I have this memorized. Although I understand the premise there are easier ways to go about this. For instance ask google. By that measurement standard I would be well over my daily allowance before breakfast ended with that and couple eggs and spinach. HWC(16) and eggs(2) spinach (2) sausage(2 actually).

Oh, I know. It’s just one of the lazy keto tricks I like and emphasizing that just because it says 0g, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s unlimited. I shoot for zero daily and get under 20g. Thanks for the cream carbs tho. Looks like I CAN eat the whole bowl! Haha
