Sugar free chocolate and candy

(A ham loving ham! - VA6KD) #1

I just visited a chocolate factory in Nevada that had a whole section dedicated to sugar free chocolate and candy. It’s all sweetened with mannitol.

While technically it is “sugar free”, mannitol, as far as I can Google, still causes a fairly reasonable insulin response, thus I’m putting it into my “preferably don’t eat” category. I did buy a selection of candies and some chocolates…the chocolate almond bark was pretty good. Sweet to me, but my kids said it was not very sweet.

I’ve had a bit of a grumbling (gassy) tummy after eating some of these sweets and I’m not sure if that’s got anything to do with the mannitol…
I don’t have enough to make a correlation yet.

Anyone got anything more on mannitol?

I bet these nasties have maltitol in them too…

I’d heard that all the sweeteners with that “-ol” or “-tol” in the word can have that gassy/gurgly tummy effect. I know most of them do for me. I usually just severely limit the amount I eat on any given day and that solves the problem proactively.

Yes, sugar alcohols have a severe laxative effect. Generally quite painful - but you don’t actually lose any weight :frowning:

The famous sugar-free 5-lb. bag of Gummi Bears with the hilarious reviews on Amazon was sweetened with erythritol, I believe, or perhaps xylitol. Anyway the explosive effect of eating a quantity of those Gummi Bears is now quite well-documented in some hilarious anecdotes.

No info on Mannitol but may I suggest these chocolates? They are rather pricey but very good so you can do what I did. Ordered some and Im hiding them from my spouse and kids so they are just for me, lol. https://www.addictivewellness.com

Thanks for the correction. It’s been a while since I last checked them out. But I knew it was one of them -ols!

Maltitol (especially in quantity) == disaster pants.

Erythritol, at least for me, has little or no gastro impact. Same for xylitol, and sorbitol.

I will occasionally indulge in sugar free chocolates containing maltitol, but I am careful to limit the consumption to avoid GI issues.

ooh! They have hot cocoa!!! I’ve been trying to find a replacement for hot cocoa when I’m skiing. At home, I use erithrytol and baking cocoa, but haven’t figured out a solution for on the mountain. Thanks! They’re sold out online now but hoping to find some in stock at a retailer.

Five gummy bears, that’s all I ate… rest went in the bin :weary:

You may enjoy this cookbook then. I have it and there are a lot of good keto beverage recipes, including about 7 different kinds of hot chocolate. https://www.amazon.com/101-KETO-Beverages-health-boosting-sugar-free/dp/1974271455/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8

Thanks! I like the idea of pre-packaged for the mountain but I suppose I could throw some mix in a ziplock!
