Sugar alternatives

(Robbi) #1

I have tried several alternatives for sugar but they don’t mix well and then I have a gritty feeling in the prepared food, and suggestions?

I have found that swerve works very well and is not gritty nor does it have the nasty aftertaste like Stevia. Swerve comes in granulated and the powdered confectioner style. I always use the confectioner style if I need to bake something that is slightly sweetened. I don’t cook a lot of sweet things but when company comes over I generally like to have some kind of a dessert that I can have a few bites of too. If you are actually baking something such as cookies or cake or you may also be able to use xylitol. I know some people choose not to use this if they have pets because it can be poisonous to pets, but I had good luck using this in several keto desserts that I have made. Swerve works really well for things that aren’t big such as mousse, fat bombs, and whipped cream.

Pulverize it in a coffee grinder.

Where can I find the confectionary kind of Swerve?

Like a few other people have mentioned, I also like Swerve. I have never seen the confectioner style in any of our grocery stores, so I just use a small bullet blender to grind it to a fine powder, and it works like a charm. No grittiness at all!

Amazon.

I like to melt it in the microwave with a little heavy cream. Then let it cool and use it like a syrup.

They carry it at Sprouts and Natural Grocers here in AZ.

The only place I can find it locally is at Publix.

The best alternative sweetener I’ve used so far is Sukrin. It’s not the cheapest, but since I don’t use it very often it hasn’t been an issue. The powdered & brown are the ones I use. Sugar eaters :grin: that I had try them thought they were real sugar.

Swerve really caused a cooling sensation for us, it was less noticeable if I mixed it with other type sweeteners. I haven’t bought more of it once I ran out.

I’m going to try mixing some of my own sweetener combos using recipes from djfoodie.

The Sukrin granulated is just erythritol

Actually all the ones I have are combos with stevia at least. My granular is a 1:1 replacement, I think I remember there was another Sukrin granular available too, maybe that’s the one you are referencing?
