The latest main stream media sensational dietary study report in the news this week.

It appears dietary demons are still made of meat.

To get the numbers they wanted data accounting manipulations were applied. Here is another opportunity to refresh our nutrition science paper reading and interpretation skills. There is a hazard ratio chart for visual interpreters.

Study uses food frequency questionnaire and excludes people with cancer and ‘abnormal’ BMI to define their selected population. That population may not include you. Nor, most of us reading here. So we can all relax (and Keto onward).

After participant exclusions for prevalent cancers, clearly bad or outlier BMI or dietary data, missing key demographics (sex, age, race, and address), or living completely or for extended periods outside territories of cancer registries with which we matched (see Supplemental Figure 1 for details), an analytic population of 79,468 remained. Enrolment required the completion of an extensive questionnaire administered by mail. This included a validated food frequency questionnaire [15,16] that ascertained self-reported dietary habits focusing on the previous 1 y.

Sooo, potentially, … ‘We’re removing anyone from the study who blows up like a balloon from eating a carb heavy diet, and also people on a (potentially) keto or carni diet who do fine because that’s weird, and only studying people who eat SAD and don’t have an issue with it, so we can tell you plant food is the secret to good health for everyone.’ Marvelous, thank you.

Oh, that’s wonderful! Wow! Not just “what did you have for lunch yesterday?” but more like “what did you have for lunch on August 10th?” Maybe even on August 10th 2024. Maybe even “how much meat did you eat in 2024?”

Food frequency questionnaires are wonderful things.
