Study indicating aspartame causes atherosclerosis (in animals)

WITHOUT raising LDL.

I’m not normally a fan of animal studies, but sometimes they are the only studies we can do. This study at least postulates how aspartame can cause atherosclerosis, and I’m wondering if there are any cardiologists out there going “if aspartame can cause plaque formation based on ‘interactions between immune cells and the endothelial cells lining the arteries’, then maybe LDL might not be causal for all heart disease?”.

But how could that be possible when we know saturated fat raises LDL and it is the root of all evil and disease known to mankind? :imp:

I feel your sarcasm and agree.

Thanks for the laugh. Maybe you should think about standup? LOL

I finally went and watched the episode - I subscribe to Nick’s channel but let this one go by - and the conclusion kind of left me unsettled. I tend to have one diet soda a day, on occasion I have two, so the “three diet Cokes a day” rule of thumb is pretty meaningless. Even less often is the number of days I don’t have a diet soda.

I tried to find a number for how many milligrams (micrograms?) that 0.15% represents and can’t. I didn’t see anything I could derive a number from.

It might be a simpler to know how much aspartame and acesulfame K are in one of those blue packets Equal sells. I checked their website, and they don’t have that information. I would guess the equivalent number of those blue packets in a 12 oz soda can would be harder to find, but that’s far more than one.
