Study for degradation of beta cells

I have heard @richard and @carl discuss on the show a few times a study that mentions an hba1c of 5.5 or above is really the point of no return as your beta cells die faster than they reproduce. Even though pre-diabetic doesn’t become official until 5.7.

Does anyone have a link to this study? I have tried to find it myself but can’t seem to find that exact one. I have a family member who just got a test per my recommendation and came back with an hba1c of 5.6. Which on her doctors report of course says “normal” and her doctor did not give her anything or say a word except that she is fine. I was hoping to come to her with this study to tell her that she is already on the slippery slope and should consider this WOE to get herself under control now.

Thanks!

Yep. I caught mine at 6.5 and 8mths later was down at 5.2 and feeling way better and more healthy and energetic.

There are a whole lot here on the dangers as your blood glucose goes higher

The one I use for that beta cell death vs regeneration is this one

Which was a study into patients from the Mayo clinic who died and they were able to autopsy quickly enough to look at the pancreas, and for whom they had an blood glucose history for the months before death. They showed people with a fasted blood glucose of 110 had already lost 40% of beta cells. That is roughly equal to 5.5% HbA1c
