I know a lot of people on the keto diet take coconut oil for the MCT. I was just wondering if coconut flakes have MCT? I know even the unsweetened ones have carbs, but I’m just curious if the fat in coconut flakes would have a little bit of it.
Strange question about coconut
Yes, contains a little MCT - BUT a lot more carbs.
What’s your problem buying MCT oil, or Liquid Coconut Cooking Oil?
nausea
The coconut oil will smell fresh and coconutty and good and I’ll eat just a tablespoon and then I want to throw up. I actually did throw up once, but I happened to start on a couple of new probiotics that day as well, and ate the coconut oil after a steak dinner. It also seems to cause reflux.
I crave coconut for some reason. It says 2 tblspn only has 3 carbs (though some sites say 5), and 8 g of fat. That doesn’t seem too bad. The actual flakes seem to contain some of the vitamins and minerals the oil doesn’t.
IMHO, you shouldn’t be just taking doses of any oil. Use it in a recipe or add to a coffee or a shake, don’t just down it. I would probably gag if I attempted just swallowing any oil.
I do like some coconut oil in a coffee, makes it really creamy and smooth.
I couldn’t just down coconut oil on it’s own either, it’s for coffee and cooking. I do use coconut milk powder (unsweetened) in coffee and shakes too.
I was looking into coconut milk because it has a lot of iron. How much coconut milk is alright to use do you think? Does it taste super sweet?
Coconut milk contains a lot of carbs - in my opinion not worth the tariff. If you can’t eat coconut oil and/or MCT oil, then I suggest you find some other source(s) of fat you can eat without issues. These two are not required for keto. For example, both red palm oil and palm kernel oil contain significant mid chain trigycerides. Palm kernel oil also has a very strong and distinctive flavour that might not agree with you unless you use for cooking, which tames that flavour very nicely.
Not the type I use no, no sweetness at all. I had to hunt around to find a coconut milk powder that wasn’t sweetened but they are available. One tablespoon of powder seems perfect for a coffee.
Butter, tallow, lard, and bacon grease all have good fatty-acid profiles. Mostly saturated and monounsaturated fats, with a low percentage of the inflammatory polyunsaturates.
I like coconut milk (especially fresh from the coconut), but as you say, it contains a lot of carbohydrate.
if you are craving then you probably are not eating enough, stress in day to day life, or you need more fat point blank from your food choices.
In that I am focusing on that word…craving
You can eat more other foods and not think twice about ‘craving’ anything ya know the more you heal on this plan.
Iron, eat red meat
from the net: It’s not surprising coconut sugar is gaining popularity. Coconut sugar gets its “miracle sugar” status because it contains traces of potassium, iron, B-vitamins, and it has a (reportedly) low glycemic index (GI). People love the idea of a “healthy sugar” that can be eaten without restrictions .
ahhh, but there should be restrictions LOL
a little key is IF YOU SAY CRAVE then others issues could be at play maybe? just a thought on it all.
But that’s a different product, there’s no sugar in the oil and very little in the milk powder (just don’t get one of the sweetened types as they’re nasty).
total serving size: 8.33 g
total net carbs: 2.3 g
2.3/8.33 = 27.6% carbs
‘Virtuallly nothing’ can add up pretty fast when you ignore the real numbers.
My love for coconut is unparalleled Probably stemming from me growing up with 3 coconut trees in our back yard.
I think coconut oil will have some MCT, just not as much as you would find in a similar quantity of pure MCT oil.
I use everything coconut. Coconut oil, milk, flour and of course I eat fresh coconuts (just cracked one open this weekend).
I don’t do coconut sugar though…I think that’s just sugar.
Coconut milk is fine. If you are using the canned ones, you only need a spoon or two in a cup of beverage. That’s hardly 1 gram of carbs. If you are using the manufactured and diluted coconut milk …many of those have literally no carbs. I use a brand of unsweetened coconut milk called “Koko milk” which has 0.3g of carbs per 100ml.
Fresh coconut meat has about 6g of carbs per 100g. It’s one of my go-to fruits on keto. Coconut flakes (which are dehydrated coconut meat), I find a bit moreish. I’d say coconut flakes would have even less MCT than coconut oil. I prefer the coconut meat though…more filling, satisfying & not as moreish.
Whatever suits your woe. I wouldn’t use it myself but I used to make coconut milk all the time. It’s super sweet, yes, it’s coconut
I only tried a canned one once, it was way less sweet and tasty but I don’t really remember. It was always was better and easier for me to make mine and I had recipes for the leftover coconut… Now I am not into coconut anymore. I think I overdid it a bit on low-carb and keto in the past… But I liked it back then very much. Maybe I should be nostalgic and do it again… Enhanced with almonds, that’s a nice flavor and makes the drink less sweet (but that’s only important if I want to consume it alone).
Only the sweetened ones are sweet, unsweetened coconut milk is not sweet at all. I use it daily.
Thanks for your input everybody. If the craving doesn’t go away, I’ll probably buy a coconut eventually and just have a taste.
Here’s a list of the various names sugar is called by. There are about a hundred more, but this is what I was easily able to lay my hands on.
