Stomach pain from...?

#1

This morning I ate a bowl of “Keto” cereal. Seriously, everyone it was so good! It was Maria Emmerich’s recipe. However, here I am 6 hours later with moderate stomach pain. Not cramping, just pain. The ingredients are pork rinds, erythritol, stevia glycerite (my personal addition since I wasn’t using Swerve), almond milk, and a few other things for flavor. I feel that it was the almond milk since I hadn’t consumed that amount in several years. Anyone else have a suggestion?

If it gives you a stomach ache don’t eat it.

Here’s my ‘cereal’ recipe, without stomach upset

1 handful of chopped macadamias
1 Tbsp ground flax
1 handful coconut
2 Tbsp Chocorite whey protein meal replacement Vanilla flavor (has some vitamins too)
2 Tbsp pure wheat bran (I had flakes written here before but meant pure bran)
3 scoops of powdered Coconut Oil, Quest brand (total of 24 g fat)
1 tsp Erythritol
Cinnamon to taste
pinch of Himalayan pink salt
One cup of unsweetened Flax milk (substitute unsweetened almond milk if nec)

I have a wide range of natural flavor extracts and add 1/2 - 1 tsp some based on what I’m feeling for that day (strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, banana, coconut, anise, maple, cherry)

It may have been the Stevia, I tried a small amount in a recipe and had horrible stomach pain (first time since Keto-ing) and an almost migraine level headache…no more Stevia for me!

I joke that KETO breakfast cereal is:

  • Crushed Pork Rinds
  • Heavy Whipping Cream

Done!

I never thought someone would eat it. LMAO.

You would be better served fasting through breakfast, and having a fat heavy lunch.

Personally I feel that artificial sweeteners are gateway drugs to maintaining your sugar addiction.

And the science for LowCarb Denver 2019 is suggesting that undigestable fiber WILL trigger a release of insulin (especially in metabolically unhealthy people). The things in the gut SENSE the type of carb (complex/simpe: Slow/Fast) and send messenger molecules to the Pancreas to start releasing insulin!

Interesting 100g of white bread and 100g of uncut oats increase the GLUCOSE levels the same…
But there is a HUGE difference in how much insulin you produce. Which is ONE argument for a complex carb/whole grain over the processed crap.

Regardless… I think cereal and fibers are evil. I am forced into being carnivore. When I break with that, I pay the price (todays GI problems and headaches)

Good luck… Just eat more natural foods. Enjoy the bacon, if you can!

Some artificial sweeteners mess with my stomach. I ate some pre-glazed ham a few months back and it gave me a mild stomach ache. I even wiped most of the “glaze” off and still it bothered me.

I do use a little stevia in my morning coffee and it doesn’t bother me.

I wrote in my accountability thread recently how I realized that almond milk was low carb and after drinking it I had the worst stomach pain. I left it alone for days and tried again, and again, cramping after drinking it, like I could feel it traveling and creating havoc the entire way through.

erythritol can cause digestive upset

(KetoMike) #9

Erythritol does not cause stomach upset in the vast majority of people. The other sugar alcohols can, especially maltitol.

#10

Oh yeah?

#11

Yes, I know that. My question is help in pinpointing it.

#12

Thank you for your recipe, however, flax is not good for women. It can cause severe problems with hormones. I avoid it. Also, bran flakes?? That’s a first for Keto to me. I avoid all of that as it causes cravings for me.

#13

Hmmm. Well, I use the Stevia glycerite in other things. Could be it in combination with something. Thank you for your input!

#14

Thank you very much! I would love to watch the LCD program but I’m too cheap to pay for it. Hopefully, it will show up on YouTube at some point and the ones that were there will share the info.

I really do try to avoid processed stuff, hence the shot at this “cereal”. It really did taste pretty good despite the ingredients. As for the substitutes I have been wondering when the evils of Stevia and Erythritol would start coming out like it did with Splenda. I figured it would probably turn out to be too good to be true.

#15

Ok that is good info for me. Thanks. I bet it was that as the other ingredients don’t seem to bother me in other recipes.

#16

Not sure about that “study”. It said they did gain but it didn’t say what their diet was. Did they just add Erythritol to their normal diet? If so, and likely so, then yeah they will gain weight because they’re gonna think “it’s sugar free!” I didn’t read the whole article. I’ll let you do that to prove otherwise. Thanks

#17

Thank you for sharing! It’s helping me narrow this down.

(KetoMike) #18

Pure bran. 2 Tbsp has 2.6g Net carbs. There are 8 Tbsp in 1/2 cup.

(KetoMike) #19

Oh yeah. In the article… Unless you’re eating massive amounts of it at a time, it’s unlikely to cause a stomach upset. However, erythritol sensitivity may vary between people.

I’ve been eating E for years. No problemo.

However, one study showed that 50 grams of erythritol in a single dose increased nausea and stomach rumbling

You eating 50g if erythritol in one sitting? That one’s kind of on you.
