Stomach Issues and general "jittery" feeling

(Pam) #1

Hello again!

So…for the last several days I have been dealing with some pretty rough stomach issues, and I am not sure if its Keto related or not. Been experiencing pretty serve cramping, very upset stomach, and just general “pain”. On top of this I feel very jittery/shaky all the time. Its a very similar feeling to when I drink 3 pots of coffee in a few hours. But I have actually cut back on my coffee consumption since I am not loading it down with cream and sugar I usually only have 3 or 4 cups a day now - compared to my at least 8 cups before.

I am finding that I am generally eating less, but am not really that hungry (except last night - I ate like a horse). I don’t think the shakiness is coming from lack of food. I really hate this feeling. It is somewhere in between anxiety attack and caffeine overdose.

Food intake just for reference has been something like this (this was yesterday)
Breakfast - 3 egg omelet with bacon, onion, peppers, cheese, mushrooms, and tomatoes. Water to drink
No Lunch
Snack - couple handfuls of “Keto Trail Mix” - basically just mixed nuts (peanuts, cashews, almonds, sunflower seeds)
Dinner - Chinese Buffet (yes - bad I know but that’s where the family went) I had water and the “Raw bar/habitachi” style thing where you pick your own raw foods and the guy cooks it for you. Had shrimp, chicken, pork, beef, egg, broccoli, zucchini, mushrooms - cooked with only soy sauce. Then has some garlic shrimp and veggies.

Dinner was actually pretty big last night - I ate a lot and left feeling overly full.

Unless you’re actually fighting off a bug, what comes to mind is electrolytes (are you getting enough salt?) and caffeine. There might be something about lower carbs/lower glycogen stores that changes caffeine metabolism for you. Also fat with the coffee might slow down the absorption of caffeine (??? I have no idea if this is true for caffeine, but it’s true for sugars so… maybe?) so you might be getting a bigger hit of it all at once even though the total amount is less.

Tell us about your supplements. Sodium, Potassiom, Magnesium ?

Hmm…don’t take any to be honest. I add salt to pretty much everything though if that counts at all.

OK. Stomach Issues are not typically an indication for missing supplements as far as i know. But the shakiness and muscle cramps are definitely symptoms you can experience when you’re missing some essential minerals.

Please research the importance of sodium, potassium and magnesium in your diet though. Especially if you’re working out, this can be a problem.

I was having the jitters last week. I looked at the label of my electrolytes drink (changed to a new one). I was getting all I really needed in that…but I was still taking extra salt, potassium and magnesium on top of it.

I curl my extra salt in half (only 3/4 tsp a day) and discontinued the rest. The jitters went away. No cramps, headaches, or irregular heart beat … so I must be getting enough of the rest too.

I had an upset stomach…but I think that was part of the diarrhea which the over dose was also causing.

Look at just how much of all this you are taking. And … cut that coffee back to just one a day. Or switch to black tea.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #7

If the symptoms persist any longer than another day or so, please see your doctor.

Wash down a teaspoon of salt twice a day for three days. Dont worry, we do not store salt/sodium - we pee it out.

I became more sensitive to caffeine on keto. I only have like half a cup a day now. Might be worth reducing coffee intake to see if it reduces/ the symptoms.

It doesn’t sound like an electrolyte deficiency to me but might as well have that right too, just in case.

I’m not much of a coffee drinker but if I drink one bulletproof coffee I get real jittery probably because I like unroasted Arabian coffee beans because it is loaded with chlorogenic acid (very bitter) and caffeine, I could not imagine drinking three or 4 cups though…lol
