Still not fat adapted

(Cale) #1

Hi, so I’ve been doing the keto diet on and off for a while now but have never gone long enough periods of time to become fully keto adapted. I have finally gotten serious about it and would love to be fully fat adapted.
It’s been 15 days that I have been in ketosis, I have a keto Mojo meter and I’ve been testing my blood every day. Lately my ketones have gotten as high as 6. 7, so I am clearly not fat adapted yet or I would be using these ketones for energy and my numbers wouldn’t be so high.

My question is if I have one bad day over Labor Day weekend, which would include alcohol and carbs, am I going to be starting back at square one to become fat adapted? Or will it just be a few day set back?
I know within a day or two I will have my Ketone levels high again, but as far as getting my body to start using them will I have completely hit the reset button?

Thanks,
Cale

I think you are misunderstanding what fat adaption means.
It takes upwards of 6-8 weeks to become fat adapted and considering you have been starting/stopping keto it may actually take a bit longer.
Your ketones give no indication on whether you are adapted or not.

Okay, but regardless, will one bad day set me back to day 1 in the 6-8 weeks it takes?

Definitely not. Just keep calm and keto on.
If you have to cheat, try and be it the one meal, not the whole day. Get right back on that horse.
The more you cheat the harder it’ll be.

I am 5 weeks in and just got fat adapted. I had a cheat day about a week and a half ago. As mentioned, make it one meal and you should be fine with only a slight delay. However, everyone is different and there may be other factors keeping you out of fat adaptation. We don’t know what you are eating and what you are cheating with so its hard toi tell. One I have learned on keto is there is no rule book. Keep carbs low, protein moderate and fat to satiety until fat adapted, then mind you rmacros to achieve your goals. Oh, an keep calm and keto on.

Your fat adaption process will not reset if you cheat if that is the question.

You’ll be fine if you cheat. I’m a big concert goer and enjoy tailgating with my friends, especially in the summertime. I have cheated a few times and around 6 weeks to my knowledge and feeling, still became fat adapted. I use to be frantic about this kind of stuff, but I’d rather live life, enjoy myself and move on the next day. Enjoy your labor day weekend!

I don’t think anyone here could tell you with 100% certainty what will happen to your physiology after letting loose over a weekend. They could tell you the probability of what might happen as a result and then it is up to you to make that decision. Whether the setback is physical or psychological, it’s still a setback. You are already seeing that or you wouldn’t be asking the question…right? Whatever you choose, own it and be ok with it.

My understanding is no, you won’t have to start over at Day 1 for fat adaption but you will have to burn through the carbs and alcohol first, so will delay the process by at least a day or 2.

No biggie if you are in this for the long haul.
