Still a little lost

(Michelle Santos) #1

Hello all!

I’ve recently started the Keto diet since February and it’s been some what of a struggle. I’m from Guam and a lot of stuff like almond flour etc are so expensive, but I still purchase them. I’ve lost 3 pounds so far, mainly because I am still so new that I believe I am messing up a little. I’ve been doing a 20:4 fast mostly because I’m used to it. I still get a little confused on getting my fat intake much higher, but I’m not hungry at all.

I had my gallbladder removed couple of years ago and I recently had a visit with my Dr. i found out I have PCOS and my liver enzymes were elevated. Does anyone have any experience with this? Also what supplements are good to take?

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #2

Welcome! I don’t believe we have any other members from Guam, so I’m glad you’ve joined us.

A lot of us here are not big fans of supplements. I don’t know what the possibilities are on Guam, but the more you can stick to real, whole foods, the better off you’ll be, in my opinion.

There are no real rules to eating a ketogenic diet, apart from doing the best you can with what’s available and affordable. Grass-fed ribeye steak is great, but hardly a requirement. One guy I heard of, who was homeless, managed to eat ketogenically on nothing but food from McDonald’s, because that was all he could afford (ate the burgers, threw away the buns), and did very well for himself. Lost quite a bit of weight, as I recall. The most important part of this way of eating is to keep your carbohydrate as low as possible, under 20 g/day, if you can manage it. The rest is negotiable, more in the nature of tweaking.

You don’t need almond flour and that sort of thing to eat a well-formulated ketogenic diet. Sometimes, in fact, trying to make “keto” versions of their favorite carb-rich foods only makes people crave the carbs even more. Not only that, but a lot of those ketofied recipes aren’t actually all that low in carbohydrate, and it is easy to exceed the limit when eating such recipes.

The point of a well-formulated ketogenic diet is to keep insulin as low as possible for as much of the time as possible, so that we can let our metabolism heal and gain access to our excess stored fat. Try to eat as much real, whole food as possible, avoid processed products that come in a box. If you like bacon and eggs, that is a great keto meal. Eat canned meat and fish, if you can’t get fresh, and so on. Feel free to post what you are eating; we’d be happy to make suggestions. And you’ll always get encouragement, too.

BTW, weight loss can be tricker for women. It sometimes takes a month or two for your hormones to sort themselves out, and sometimes there are things stored in your fat tissue that come out along with the fat and they can mess you up a bit. So try not to get discouraged, and keep on for at least another month before deciding that this way of eating is not for you.

^^^this!

I also am not a big fan of trying to replicate what I call bad foods like pasta. But to each their own. Stay with this as it will take up to three months to fully adapt. Your energy levels will fully recover by then.

Welcome! @michelle_santos Many of us on the forum have PCOS😡 and it definetly makes weightloss more challenging with hormonal imbalance. Tracking, eliminating dairy, and eating whole foods have helped me the most balancing out my hormones. Feel free to PM me for info on a tracking app called my flo. It’s helped put my PCOS in remission

@PaulL thank you so much for your reply! A friend of mine who is Keto suggested that I might have to take a bike or choline supplement if I’m not mistaken. Only due to no gallbladder issue. I do try to stick to my meats and veggies so I wouldnt have to recreate anything! Also, thank you for the welcome. The island food is good but so unhealthy lol.

@Monurse I haven’t had my cycle since October so I started my research and I feared it was PCOS, but my recent appt confirmed it. My other half and I have been trying to have a kid for a couple of months already. I seriously don’t understand a lot dealing with that.

@jakesantiago I think my first 2 weeks in I was pretty okay. I no longer care for rice and coming from an island we eat rice with everything. I no longer care for Coke either and I drank it like every day. So far I’m pretty happy on how I’ve been doing, i just felt lost lol
