Stevia Advice

#1

Am I the only one that thinks this stuff ruins the taste of everything??? Everything it touches it gives it a bitter taste. I was not expecting it to taste like sugar but this does not seem like a viable substitute.

Some of the products with stevia do taste bitter , the granules I’m using right now is my favorite so far , it is a stevia/ erythritol blend from Pyure. It is good on berries, or stirred into drinks, I haven’t baked much with it but you might like it.

I have 3 different types. Two are liquid and the third is granules. The liquid is a blend of erythritol and stevia. I suppose brand could make a difference. I don’t know.

#4

I concur. I use it in the couple of keto friendly desserts that I make. I don’t notice any bitterness at all. Plus you can get at Walmart for (relatively) cheap. If I recall correctly, it’s twice as sweet as sugar so you use it a ration of 1:2 (IE, if recipe calls for 2 cups of sugar, you’d use 1 cup of Pyure).

I also hate it. I have the drops in plain, English toffee and French Vanilla. I have the granules, I have different brand of packets. I have a blend and straight leaf extract.

I find myself using tiny amounts of sucralose even though I am trying so hard to stop it in order to avoid the stevia.

Yes I agree!

I could never go without sugar in my tea or coffee.
I tried stevia, my gosh, gross.
I don’t use any sweeteners at all anymore and drink my coffee pretty bland.

#7

Yep, not a fan of stevia either. Recently switched to erythritol instead.

I think it’s like that revolting coriander herb stuff. Works for weirdos, not for others.

Liquid stevia. Damn near the crappiest stuff I ever tasted. Wasted a lot of HWC and coffee trying to acquire a taste for it. Chunked it in the trash. Same for xylitol packets. Splenda (sucralose) is ok but getting weaned down too. All I care for now is just a very small squirt of Mio in my carbonated Pellegrino water.

#10

Haha, I must be half a weirdo then. Hate stevia, love coriander.

(Running from stupidity) #11

No, that qualifies you you as a complete weirdo, well done.

I’ve tried a few different ones, never liked
any of them until I tried Truvia. Imagine my surprise when I finally looked at the ingredients after about a year of using it, just to find that it contains erythritol (sp?). So funny, because I love Swerve – no wonder I like Truvia

I don’t hate stevia; it’s the only sweetener I use. I have a reaction to glycerin (present in many liquid versions), so I use the white powder only:

Since the subject line invites “advice,” here goes:

Try using stevia with strong flavors (e.g., chocolate or lemon, but not vanilla).

Try using less than is recommended. It is very concentrated. I figure one tiny spoon (included in container) equals two teaspoons of sugar, and one level teaspoon of stevia equals a cup of sugar.

Or mix stevia with whatever other sweetener you can tolerate or justify; mixing sweeteners has a “synergystic” effect so you can use less.

Mmmmmm

#15

Agree. I think it’s bloody awful.

#16

I’ll have to try a very small dose as you suggested and see if that does make a difference.

If it’s tasting bitter than you are using too much of it!

Makes my hands and feet numb and tingling mimicking the symptoms like I am deficient in B-Complex vitamins, magnesium, potassium and sodium.

Strange stuff!

Poison to me!

#18

Actual looking at my jar of so called ‘stevia’, it’s full of other crap fillers and only one of the ingredients is stevia. Think I’ll be avoiding that altogether.

Glad I am not alone here. Seems to be the Keto go to for sweetner. I was so disappointed. I used come packets of whole earth this morning in my green tea. I tried it on my finger. It tasted fine. I think those that are blaming the liquid version could be on to something. This version has Monk Fruit blended in. My tea tasted fine too. So I may have found a form I can use. Yea!

I also saw that Splenda makes a Stevia that claims no bitter test. This tells me two things 1. Stevia is bitter. 2. There is hope.

Eythritol is also in Stevia. Perhaps individually it is fine.

LMAO…Same. I struggled through my coffee though. I figured if I am determined to drink coffee than this is the price I have to pay.

I will have to check these out. Going to spend a fortune trying different types.

We tried it in a couple of chocolate recipes. I do not know. Between the chocolate being bitter (100% Cacao) and the Stevia I would have rather just been kicked in the face.

Jesus…sounds like this stuff needs to have a pharmaceutical disclaimer like in the drug commercials.

Just look up stevia on wEBMD and look at all the symptoms…lol it should have one!

Only time I feel weird is when I eat something with that stuff in it!
