Stay-On-Plan September - ZC Carnivore 30 day challenge September 2024

An increased insulin spike after a night meal may help retain more sodium at the kidneys. Inhibition of ketosis and the accompanying naturesis in the diuresis as the glycogen gets depleted will mitigate electrolyte losses with the body fluid loss. I think that sodium control system then links into the renin, angiotensin and aldosterone system. It is important in diseases like diabetes insipidus and for electrolyte control, especially potassium. But I am hazy on the details. Those notes are just a way to get into the rabbit hole.

Dr. Salad covers it in the first 2 minutes of the video (so you don’t have to endure more than that).

I accidentally read some Bertrand Russell. It’s an easy trap in which to fall. After only two sentences I wrote a note;

Hatred creates a too easy reciprocity

Then I wondered on diets and shame. It’s important to dissipate this thinking, I think.

Self hatred spins a spiral. A playground slide with seemingly no end.

However, eating low carb carnivore brings a clarity of thought and an energy to find, with time, a contented self, I think. Resulting in a chuckle at my musings.

The orchids on the property are changing with the weather.

I’ve also dropped eggs and dairy for now. I know your dairy situation and understand how hard that is. I had a family party last weekend, so had plenty of dairy around. I’ve stayed out of it since then, but man, it was distracting yesterday. It’s a good think hubby can’t eat dairy, because I was ready to get in the car and go to the store.

I know that with carnivore it’s best to stop eating when the food no longer tastes good, but for me right now, dairy seems to override that.

(Liz ) #104

@beannoise Ok yeah that resonates. I bet letting go of dairy for 30 days would make a difference. And if it’s effective I’d just keep going. Yeah it’s very difficult but I’ve read so much how it’s got something addictive in it. I’m desperate to get these 15-20 pounds back off asap because my clothes are tight. Wishing you well!! I know that about to get in the car feeling lol grateful to be in a keto household for sure!!

Maybe that’s possible? It could also be that whatever a carnivore is eating is lacking certain “things” that are needed by the person. I could see something like raw honey having those, because it probably has a lot of stuff. But something like, say, an apple or a pear produced in massive orchards that have been over farmed for decades, how much would that have? In other words, even the berry farms we go to, they have been there for years. Even if they fertilize for the plants, that fertilizer is for the plants and I doubt they’re adding much for us. How many electrolytes or vitamins are in the fruit?

So, is the idea that the meat provides the “things” that are needed, and the carbs prevent those from being peed out?

And he was extremely insulin sensitive. It’s going to be an issue for someone like me, who even after a decade of low carb, has fasting insulin 10+. I follow a guy on Threads who keeps overeating (eating 4,000+ calories a day of carnivore) and losing weight while doing so. But his fasting insulin is below 3. The ONLY time I got a fasting insulin that low was when I got an insulin test done after fasting 4.5 days.

I don’t eat fruit (or rarely eat fruit) and have no issues. I do have to take some magnesium and do take some extra minerals. But I find it hard to believe that eating something that directly affects the liver is a good thing for those of us who still have insulin issues.

The same food pretty much tastes the same all the time for me and my SO so we don’t understand people who have this… (The desire towards it may vary though. That’s appetite and sadly, it has nothing to do with my need for fuel, satiation or anything like that. But the taste belongs to the food, it doesn’t just change for us.) There is a reason I can easily massively overeat on any diet that has just remotely tasty food (not like I would be willing to do any diet that is any worse tasting than my previous ones but still)… Sure, carnivore helps a ton, I can avoid overeating with very little effort and no suffering, even a calorie deficit is easily possible BUT I still can overeat. Now and then, not every day as on high-carb… Oh that was bad, carbs made me so hungry… I still was pretty satiated nearly all the time, it just took very much food and A TON of fat. I blame that for missing fat since low-carb. But carnivore helps with that too - especially after I learned to enjoy lean pork.

I do have a stop sign with meat sometimes. Now always, sadly. But I can’t overeat lean pork, it’s something. I can overeat fatty meat so I just don’t try to eat mostly that for a bigger meal. It works well. I start with lean meat and when I can’t eat more as I get bored of leanness, I eat some fatty meat too. And if it’s still not enough, processed meat. I always can eat that. (And eggs and dairy here and there but usually just as accent.)

No dairy and no eggs still seems like room 101. NOPE. I can go super low, no problem (not like I did that for longer… maybe I will try it in October?) but zero? No way.

But I truly went low. It was so odd to make a sunny side up today. I almost forgot about egg as food lately but we have 40 again ~. Oh, eggs. Lovely. But 1 will do at once.
I eat a bit cheesy now. I am sure I could stop if I wanted :stuck_out_tongue: And it’s not really much, just not almost zero.

We couldn’t go shopping due to rainy weather, things get interesting. Almost no dairy at home except cheese (there are always tempting sales and cheese is super important for Alvaro) and milk powder.
I cooked too much lately and still am in no mood to make pâté but Alvaro helped with it and hungry me can start with a little bit too… So we will eat this pork liver. I still don’t really like it. But it is edible and variety is nice. I have pork shoulder now. Tiny slab in the air fryer but all is mine as Alvaro can’t eat so fatty meat. He can eat fatty (he loves eggs with sausage - the sausage is half fat - and cheese, after all) just not fatty meat. Pork chuck is where we meet as I think I mentioned a few times already. Even there, I eat the fattier part and he the leaner part. And all is well.

In my definition, he doesn’t overeat at all then. He must use up what he eats and some more. I wonder about his metabolism and stuff

After being keto for the past seven years and struggling with my electrolytes the entire time, I recently decided to be more paleo and increase my fruit and veggie intake.

It’s only been two days, but I’ve already noticed a change. My heart palpitations have decreased significantly and I’m sleeping better. Now it’s only been two days, so it could be coincidence, so I’ll have to see if the trend continues.

If it was lack of nutrients, I don’t think two days would be enough to make a difference. It is enough for holding extra water, because my weight has gone up about 3 pounds in the past few days.

I’ll update over the next few weeks in a different thread so I don’t hijack the carnivore thread .

After my heart/cognitive/gut issues… I decided to make a smoothie every day… spinach, chard, blueberries, avocado, cream and water.
Since my colon surgery, it’s hard to pin down just one thing that has made such a significant change for the better. My colon had me in constant inflammation so that is probably a huge part of why I feel so much better. But I believe my smoothie is probably helping too. At least, it’s not a negative. I feel better now than I have in years.

So, I would not discount how you are feeling after a short time with the additional foods. We never know unless we try… then wait and see.
Hopefully your improvement will continue too!

I was having smoothies every day for months full of goodness and they definitely helped with digestive issues. Only thing is, as mine had protein powder in they’re a bit too carb heavy for me at the moment.

Still making them for hubby though, he likes banana, blueberries, avocado & spinach best. Once I’ve shed this extra weight I’d like to incorporate them again.

I rarely ever had smoothies but they definitely had zero green stuff in them
By the way, Alvaro used some green thing in a dish (it’s its main ingredient). In the past, I loved it and felt an irresistible compulsion to eat half of the pot right away… I don’t even like it now. It very much meh.
I STILL feel this so surreal. I really don’t like some of my old favs.
Pork, on the other hand is impossible to get bored of as long as I don’t try to live almost exclusively on them, use variety and don’t force the lean cuts… Eggs are the same and I love my dairy items as well. I theoretically can live without the others. For a while, at least. Pork, egg and some dairy is so vital that it would be odd and probably hard not to eat them for a whole day…
Am I lucky? It’s still not easy to stick to carnivore, I never do that. But my shorter carni times are easy, enjoyable and my body is the happiest. And I hope it will be really simple now as well. For me, I never will eat as simple as most of you and it’s fine.

I didn’t make pâté in the end. I could eat it without assembling and mixing. So I had it with my pork. I probably was low on protein during the day yesterday as I got so hungry after midnight I had to eat a lot. liver felt good. It was super lean, not juicy, not tasty just like before, of course but it felt sooo good to consume protein. I don’t think this is a common human thing but my body is very sensitive to it. It wanted protein. A lot. I ate so much meat considering it was night (I usually just need a little extra at that time)… I put the rest (after my lunch today. it was less easy to eat now though the pork shoulder helped a lot) into the freezer. It will be good when I will miss liver and I won’t need to tell myself that I consumed over 1kg in the last 1.5 weeks so NOPE… Too bad I can’t use liver as a staple due to its too high nutrition content :frowning: But I probably would be bored of it anyway…? Oh I am sure I could still eat much more than now and I am firmly above the recommended amount (but way below the dangerous one).
I have been planning a nice chicken heart and liver stew too… But that’s fine, I share it with Alvaro and it’s mostly heart  Chicken heart is lovely.

I feel I just repeat myself and probably I do. I don’;t even talk much about my food lately as it’s the usual… Maybe if I will have tracking data again. I am curious what I will get now.
But it was lovely not to do any tracking for a long while.

Husband charcoal grilled us some large fatty ribeyes last night. It’s getting cooler and darker at dinner time so that might be it for grilling season. I still love a half pound bacon cheeseburger I fry in the small cast iron skillet, (having the burger fill the whole tiny pan reduces the smoke I hate having in the house). I’ll have to find mom and Dell a new Saturday dinner, maybe an easy ground beef stew. I meant to pick up some cooked pork at Trader Joe’s, but I forgot. I like to cube it & heat it up then put two fried eggs over it, I do use hot sauce on that. Nice and fatty. I’m solar powered & I live for the long days. Trying not to get depressed about the shorter days. But I’ll just grit my teeth until February when the light returns and try to spend as much time out in the yard as possible. I do all the yard work so that’s a good excuse. When I’m inside I’m always working on a quilt.

Our outside cooking is available all year round  Not this weekend as it was windy and yesterday even rainy. But sure, it’s best when it’s not too hot or too cold.

I start to get used to the autumn. That sudden -20 Celsius was tough…But the temperature got normal and I regenerated from the shock so I am not easily cold anymore. The house keeps a good temperature but we do need some warmer clothes here and there.
I am solar powered too but I don’t like super high temps so it’s my best time. Finally, hiking and running season started and I can go out pretty much any time, no need to hide inside due to the hot sun! Of course, I being too choosy, won’t go out in cold (compared to what I can expect in the next days) or rainy weather if possible. But we have plenty of sunshine in winter and that’s nice. But we have great times before winter. Autumn is my fav season for a reason! It probably wouldn’t work everywhere but it does here. October is the most ideal time to do hiking (good temperature, usually lots of sunshine and colorful leaves), that’s why we will do just that. Well we planned it for September but we always got rain on the weekend lately :frowning:

But I need as long as possible days too. So I need to get used to wake up just after the sun. That’s a very nice time in winter but I need proper sleep and a sane bedtime for it.

(Food is nothing unusual, pork, eggs and cheese, mostly, I got very satiated today but I suspect that my big meaty night eating had a role in it as well. I got enough fresh air and sunshine today so that’s all right. This week we had 5 sunny days, 1 gloomy/sunny day and a rainy/sunny one. Hungarian autumn at its best.)

Hey team. Let’s move these great discussions over to an Oxtober Carnivore Challenge thread. Yu can start to answer the most recent posts here but post the answers in the next thread by opening the October thread while you are typing.

I can feel the winds changing with talk of smoothies and fruit! Lucky we got to the end of September. It will be interesting to read what is planned for our next bite-sized challenge, and whether we like the taste of it.

@robintemplin or Admin, please can this thread close now?
