Starting my Keto journey!

(Mike ) #1

Hi all,

New to the forum and also new to the Ketogenic experience.

I have been doing some research and I am looking to make a lifestyle change to helo further my health and also lose weight in the process. I have heard some great things about this way of living so lets give it a go!

I was hoping that I could get some information from people with experience on the following things if possible.

  1. As the internet is full of pros and cons for everything, I was wondering if there was anything specific that I should look out for that could potentially be detrimental to my health? I have done some research into Ketoacidosis and the trouble it can cause, but are there any other side affects I should be aware of?

  2. Continuing on from Ketoacidosis, is it wise that I measure my Keto’s often? I currently have no way of doing this but I am wondering if I will need to invest in a blood monitor to stay safe?

  3. Do people tend to stick to higher Keto’s at all time, or is it the type of dietary change that should only be done in phases? Could I change my diet for good without any adverse health effects?

  4. As i work out I often take protein drinks to help with recovery, these have 0.6g carbs to 0.2g fibre per drink, I am presuming this wont mess things up if I continue with these?

  5. I often do intermittent fasting where by I dont eat from around 8pm - 1pm the following day, will this cause me any issues by not having breakfast when sticking to a Keto diet?

Any other bits of advice would be fantastic as I have a general idea of what I am getting into , but its always good to hear first hand information from people. I currently weight 14st 4lb and I am 5 ft 9" with an endomorph physique but not carrying a massive amount of fat (although there is some!)

I was planning on starting my Keto journey with a “Fat fast” sticking to around 1200 calories per day with 80%-90% of them coming from fats. Then moving into a nice controlled diet after around 5 days, does anyone have any experience or guidance when doing this?

Thanks in advance

Mike

Hi Mike and welcome. I will just address a couple of things and I’m sure others will chime in.
Unless you are diabetic type 1 ketoacidosis is not an issue, so don’t worry…
Measuring ketones is up to you - some do, some don’t. I don’t, I just keep my carbs very low and measure how I feel and what else my body is telling me.

I don’t know much about protein drinks, but moderate protein is all that is needed, so you may not want to continue them.

Intermittent fasting is perfect with a keto diet and often comes naturally after cutting the carbs way down. I found that starting keto first made extending the fasts so easy.

Good luck as you start on this amazing journey!

Hi Heather,

Thanks for the reply! That’s good to hear about the Ketoacidosis, I thought it was something that could be a byproduct but guess not :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks again for the reply and looking forward to starting my journey!

Welcome to Keto. Your body will thank you.

Since I tend to ramble on, I intend to keep this short :cowboy_hat_face:

Indeed, as previously @HeatherD mentioned, fasting will come as a natural process of being Keto. You don’t need to. But you will find you just aren’t hungry anymore. I have gone over 72 hours without eating. It wasn’t planned, I just wasn’t hungry. I felt perfectly fine in every way. I decided to eat, well, because I thought I should. Fasting or not, you will feel great.

I weighed in at 245 pounds the day I started Keto. In two weeks I lost 40 of that. And boy did I feel great. Not to mention getting off my Type 2 Diabetes meds. My blood sugars are almost always in the non-diabetic zone, with the rare instance when I eat a bit too many carbs or too much protein. My goal is zero grams of carbs per day, a difficult goal to be sure.

I highly recommend listening to the 2 Keto Dudes podcasts. Start with the first episode, and work your way through them. They are relatively short, and full of information. They are doing an awesome job!

Thank you very much @Robert_Johnson!

I hadn’t heard of the podcast but I drive a lot with work so podcasts are a big part of my day and I’ll be sure to add the 2 Keto Dudes to my roster!

Today is the day I am starting and I’m heading to the supermarket to try and stock up on some ingredients to make my first meals today!

I’m looking forward to starting as I enjoy cooking but I’ve got lazy lately so this will hopefully spur me on, to get back into the kitchen!
