Hi everyone I’m new here and I began keto 2/14/18 and have lost 48 lbs but have been struggling lately. The scale hasn’t moved for 3 weeks now and on previous diets I hit a plateau that I can’t break and then I give up. I can’t let that happen this time!
I need to lose about 100 more pounds and I have been using the lose it app to track my food and exercise.
I have a lung disease and have just been put on prednisone for the first time while doing keto. Past experience with prednisone has always resulted in constant hunger and it’s no different this time! I’ve actually gained 3 lbs and I’ve only been on it for 3 days.
Do you have any advise on how to maintain until I get thru this and then get back to losing again?
I try to keep my carbs below 20, my fats around 75% and then I just assume the protein will automatically be in the correct range of 20%, but now I think I’m wrong on that.
It seems like everything I learn about keto, is contradicted later on and I don’t know what’s right anymore.
I’ve gotten 5 of my family members on keto and they’re all looking to me for direction.
Please help us all be successful in our weight loss journey!
Stalled and now hungry due to prednisone
That’s a tough one. I’m not expert at Keto yet, but I’m an old hand at prednisone. It’s the worst. But breathing just really improves quality of life, so I guess you’re stuck with it.
I think we start with an order of needs here. Your lung function is paramount. You must have been unwell to have been put on the meds. What’s the dose and time period for this? I have taken anything from 5mg for 9 months, to one dose of 160mg, but the usual for me was 50mg each day for three days then stop, no tailing off. There is huge variation there.
I’m going to assume you’re on 25mg a day for a few weeks, with a drop down schedule over two weeks or so. This will mean your hunger will be raging. It’s the worst.
Given Keto won’t do you much good if you can’t breathe (because you’ll be dead), I think the best strategy is to KCKO and forget about volume, just eat, but stay under carbs and go to your top protein range. For me that would be less than 20g carbs, about 70g of protein.
Research all the fat bombs, eat butter, crunchy pork rinds and cheese. Stuff yourself with fat, and even if you gain some weight a lot of that will be fluid from your meds. Prednisone makes me really puffy. That’s not fat, that’s fluid. This means once you get off the drugs that will go. It takes me a month or so to lose it, sometimes longer but it depends on the dose schedule.
One thing I hope is that the Keto diet will help with your symptoms. It has helped a LOT with my asthma.
You’re doing great. Nearly 50lbs weight loss is amazing. This isn’t a set back, it’s a bump in the road, so hang tight. You got this.
Thank you swiftynix I appreciate your insight. It makes more sense to hear it from someone who has been there.
Right now I’m on 40 mgs for 5 days but my doctor never starts me out on a high enough dose to kick the problem so I start to feel better and then it comes right back and then he will put me on a higher, longer dose.
Right now I’m trying not to worry about calories, and I’m trying to focus on fats the most but I think my protein is too high as well. Last weeks average was 101, but before that it was always in the 60s. I’m not even sure how much protein I should have.
That’s annoying about the dose- seems destined to drag it out unnecessarily. But I’m not a medical doctor, so I won’t comment.
What I can do is point you in the direction of how to work out your macros,

That’s a good place to start, and will give you some direction. But forget about calories and just eat fat in any form you can handle. That way you don’t have to ignore those cravings, but you’ll stay the course.
