Any South Africans out there? . A nice man came into work the other day and he was snacking on Broewors (hope that’s spelt right) he gave me some and they were delicious! (I’m assuming they are ok on keto)So on Saturday I’m making the trip into Melbourne to “the South African shop” to get me some
. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions of other foods I might be able to pick up that are Keto? Any suggestions would be awesome.
South African Foods
Yes I will be getting some of that too! I guess just go easy because of protein?
I just ordered biltong and peri peri droewors from https://bullandcleaver.com. They are on the expensive side but I am considering them for upcoming backpacking trips. If I like them I will buy a pound of each to keep me going down the trail.
It is amazing to me that in four ounces they pack so much fat and protein. They shipped on Saturday and I can’t wait to try them. Given the nutrition info I would say they are perfect keto food.
Biltong:
Ingredients: Beef, Vinegar, Salt, Coriander, Black Pepper.
Nutritional info (4 oz): 320 calories, 60g protein, 10g fat, 0g carbohydrates
Peri peri droewors:
Ingredients: Beef, Salt, Coriander, Black Pepper, Nutmeg, Clove, Lamb Casings, Vinegar, Spices
Nutritional info (4 oz): 400 calories, 56g protein, 14g fat, 0g carbohydrates
Awesome! Peri Peri sounds delicious. I’ll see if they have different flavours for me to try!
Borewors are traditionally cooked on an outside grill, and the whole affair is called a braii. Have a lekker one!
I received my package from Bull and Cleaver today. I ate one ounce of each as a snack. I feel pull and it was awesome, the Peri Peri is spicy … not hot spicy but has a lot of flavors. The Biltong surprised me it was had a mellow flavor, I was not sure I liked it at first but it grew on me.

It was just a snack and what I thought was a little bit. I am super stoked because a little bit of this will allow me to hit my protein/fat macros easier and I think I found the perfect backpacking food.
The Droewors was $12 for 4 oz. and the Biltong $8 for 4 oz. I may just buy a pound of each just to get moving on the trail. I am curious to show around for different brands and prices.
OK, that’s made from American steak. In RSA jerky from any animal is called biltong. Try kudo some time.
Looks like a good product, no sugar or carbs. Rare for USA jerky unless homemade.
How to make biltong. I used a dehydrator. It’s rather easy, just need time to let it dry!
How about Bobotie? I guess you’d have to find a substitute for the bread. A long time ago I lived with a couple of South African rugby players.
