Soooooo dry

(Trish) #1

Anyone have any thoughts on dry skin? I am so dry, especially my face and scalp. I am well hydrated at this point since starting keto nov. 30. I have one coffee in the morning and only drink club soda the rest of the day often having the proverbial 8 glasses of water. Prior to keto I never drank water and was always dehydrated but never thirsty, i,e. Coffee a.m. Whisky p.m. That’s it, that’s all. So now I should be well hydrated, but my skin is so dry just rubbing it makes it flake. My cheeks feel rough, scaly. If I exfoliate and moisturizer it’s better for that day but then right back to dry. My scalp is always itchy, flaky. I only use chemical free shampoo…you know, no parabens, no SLS, etc. I take omega 3 daily and eat lots of fats, mostly butter, olive oil, salad dressings, bacon and other meat fats or skin. Also, I’m fat, so surely it’s not that my body is simply fat deprived LOL. I’ve always had dry skin but wasn’t this bad before keto. Any thoughts on specific supplements or micronutrients I should be taking? Or thoughts in general? Thanks.

I always had skin issues in the winter until this year since I’ve been supplementing with Iodine last summer. It’s made a huge difference in my skin, among other things.

(Tracy) #3

I have the same problem, except it’s my lips and hands cracked and bleeding. For me it’s a sign that I need more salt and/or an electrolyte supplement.

Iodine? Interesting. That is I need one of the things I’ve noticed on my cronometer that I don’t seem to get hardly any of. I’m a bit leery though of adding it as a supplement since I’m post L thyroidectomy for CA. Will check with my oncologist end of march at my appt. Was planning on asking about it anyway since noticing it so low.

Ya my lips are bad right now too. Was out of town Friday in a dry environment as I noticed they got chapped. Usually one or two applications of blistex solves it but not this time.

Oils and fats.

When I first tried keto, I got severly chapped hands. I started eating more fat and it went back to normal. However, I’m a fan of everyone is different, so yours could be a different issue.

Coconut oil has more uses than just in food and drink

(Jeanne Wagner) #9

Yup, I have container of whipped coconut oil and another oil I can’t rmember, infused with Young Living Essential Oil. Heavenly!

(Trish) #10

I’ve literally put organic coconut oil on my face at bedtime…no difference :frowning:

(Allie) #11

I do it every night, keep at it, morning too and whenever you feel dryness. Olive oil is very good too. What do you use to clean your face? I use this as everything else I’ve tried is too drying -

It could be part of your body rebalancing hormonally due to keto and if this is the case, it’ll settle.

(Trish) #12

I just use either soap and water as I always have or that apricot scrub from St. Ives to exfoliate. I suppose it could be coincidentally hormonal…I’m 49 later this year so…

(Ellen) #13

What kind of supplements? The multi vit I take has 67% rda iodine, would you recommend extra?

(Ellen) #14

Do you think Bio-oil would work as well? I’ve heard can help with scars & stretch marks so thinking of giving it a go.

(Allie) #15

Both of those things have been very drying for me, soap really isn’t good for skin as it strips all the natural oils. You may want to find something that’s oil based as it would be much less harsh on your skin.

(Allie) #16

I don’t have any experience of it but don’t see there’s be any harm in trying as long as it’s not perfumed or anything. Cocoa butter is good but can make you want chocolate :joy:

(Ellen) #17

That wouldn’t be a problem for me, chocolate is nasty stuff that gives me migraines, might try cocobutter as probably cheaper than bio oil.

@Shallimar

Vitamin D3 and Vitamin B2, deficiency in both, are related to skin dryness. The B2 skin dryness will show up around the mouth. Iodine deficiency is also linked to dry skin but is considered a more rare condition. Ample supplementation of D3 generally smooths out the skin especially the rough skin on elbows, thighs, back of arms.

I would suggest staying away from any soap or essential oils in facial products since many are drying. I use oils from the Aura Cacia line directly on my face (aging skin here) Baobab, Argan, Rosehip oils.

Eat more nuts:)

I do take d3 supplements daily as I know I’m low living in Canada. Didn’t know the skin connection though. All my B vitamins are at or above RDAs also. I’m monitoring that stuff pretty anally through cronometer lol. That’s why I’m a bit frustrated I guess because it seems that I’m taking all the right stuff already.

Very frustrating for you. And it seems you have done great tracking your nutrients as well. Keep in mind that RDA is not the therapeutic levels. For instance, I take 50,000 iu of D3 every Sunday as a loading dose to up my levels that Allopathic medicine would suggest is fine at a lab of 30 but other medicines suggest should be 40-80. Daily supplementing is not as effective as “loading dose”. And the dosage of D3 varies due to ones ability to absorb. D3 requires K2 or at least there is a suggestion of requiring it. K2 also helps your body know where to put the calcium (teeth and bones not arteries, for example)

For mental health B-complex supplements are suggested for stress, memory, energy at levels much higher than RDA. A complex of 100mg across all B vitamins is typical.

In any case you would do well making a call to your MD who treated your thyroid and make sure any of these suggestions are healthy for you. Hope you are healing well from your surgery.
