So, Who Have You Converted To Keto?

My kids were raised on low-carb fare and I think it’s one of the best things I ever did for them. They both took culinary classes when they were in high school, and are now healthy 19-year-old adults who understand what good food is, even if they don’t always eat the way know they should now. They are still teenagers, after all! My son, who is currently away at college, says he can’t wait to come home to eat my cooking.

My mom and dad came along with me when my kids were little, too. It made it so much easier to raise my kids without all the junk. No sweets at Grandma’s house! My dad is more reluctant, honestly, but he has been known to do the odd bit of fasting, even if he still has bread. He’s a work in progress. Eventually, I’ll get him to replace the carbs.

I also lured my husband over to the keto side when we started dating. So my entire household is keto most of the time, and it’s pretty great.

When Dr. Fung’s The Obesity Code first came out, I had my copy pre-ordered. I read through it quickly and immediately bought another copy for my endocrinologist. She was so pleased to be given a book to read as she, coincidentally, was just about to take a week of leave from work. She read it before my next appointment, loved it, and has been recommending it to her patients ever since.

I’m a seamstress, so people often end up discussing with me how they’ve gained weight, and now their clothes aren’t fitting well, etc. while I’m taking their measurements. One of my regulars was telling me last year how nothing was working, and everything was so hard. She’d developed asthma, and was gaining weight. She was dragging herself to the gym on a regular basis. I told her about Dr. Fung, and let her borrow my books. She came back in again several months later, and 30 pounds lighter, looking amazing. Although she didn’t mention that keto and fasting were working for her, she did bring me back my books and thanked me for the loan.

This month one of my husband’s co-workers, a young woman in her early 20’s, was diagnosed with PCOS and pre-diabetes. My husband told her she needed to talk to me, as I also have PCOS. I made up a list of resources, including the 2 Keto Dudes Podcast, and had a chat with her that day. She seemed a little overwhelmed and scared but reassured that there was something within her control. I think she’s struggling a bit, but it’s a lot to learn all at once, and I told her to come to me with any questions. She seemed really happy to see me bring my keto foods to a going-away potluck party for some other of my husband’s co-workers this week.

At the same potluck, I was introduced to a co-worker’s girlfriend. She was asking me about my food and was interested when I told her it was keto. She asked what keto was, and wasn’t it something about going for a certain number of hours without eating. I explained a tiny bit about keto and intermittent fasting. She said she’d been reading a lot of stuff, having recently been diagnosed with T2D. I asked if she listened to podcasts. She didn’t, but she handed me her phone. I downloaded the app to her phone, subscribed her to 2 Keto Dudes, and showed her how to listen. I also told her to get in touch if she needed help. She seemed pretty excited, and I feel so good being able to help someone find the information they so desperately need.
