So, Who Have You Converted To Keto?

(Sophie) #1

We all bang our heads daily against friends, family, doctors, co-workers, etc., that tell us we are killing ourselves with this high fat diet, blah, blah, I’ll spare you the litany because you already know it.

Lets talk instead about those around us that have seen the light!

My first was my sweet cousin. She has always been careful to eat whole foods to begin with, but like everybody else she wanted to lose those last stubborn 10lbs. I talked to her about Keto and kicked her horrible whole wheat and sugary crap to the curb on my last visit. Lo and behold, she stuck with it and lost her desired weight and maybe a little more and she totally rocked a dress that she wanted to wear for a wedding. She was also a natural IF but had misgivings about not eating breakfast so we nipped that stupid shit in the bud too! Now she tells me that Keto is seems very intuitive to her as a WOE! Success!

Now, here’s my strange one… one of my Besties, whom I’ve known for 6yrs+ and who has watched me battle my weight on Lo-Carb all that time, has been recently diagnosed as T2D controlled on Medformin. She knows full well about removing sugar and starches and was always careful about not eating a lot of them but still couldn’t/wouldn’t give them up, until the price of her Metformin increased from $70 per month to over $300 for a months worth of pills! I guess that was a big motivation for her to get off the drug and reverse her T2D! At lunch last week, I ordered my usual whacky keto-fied meal of a swiss cheese, mushroom hamburger no-bun with a side of sauteed mushrooms and she told the waiter that she’d have what I was having! Blew My Shit Away! So, I’m tentatively adding her to my list of converts. We’ll see how she does in the coming months.

Who have you converted? It’s all baby steps!

Myself.

My mom (T2D) and loosely my dad and my oldest daughter. My mom’s A1C is down to 6.2 (she said it hadn’t been below 7 in years…I didn’t ask her what her highest was, but I suspect 8s or higher). Thanks to SAD thinking she has a pacemaker and about 23% use of her kidneys. (For the first time in a couple years, her kidney function hasn’t continued to decrease so I’m hoping keto heals in time and we see that % increase.)

Have a friend who decided to do the no breads, pastas, pizzas, sweets part and she lost 20 lbs. in a couple of months and is rocking her older wardrobe and loving life. She went low carb, not totally keto but it works for her.

My hairdresser is vegan and she is doing keto level carbs to break her addiction to sugar and sugary treats. Now that her youngest child is out of the house, she hopes to kick sugar out of her life. She keeps gaining and losing the same 20 lbs. Currently she is losing again, with keto level carbs, hoping she keeps the weight off. She is even considering extended fasts. Now that she has seen I didn’t die. Hopefully she will be a ketozombie too permanently. Too soon to say.

Guess I have to include my husband, he eats pretty much the same as me, and is keeping his T2D under control with diet and exercise. He is a TOFI, so he does have a bit of non keto stuff a few times a week, trying to keep his weight up. He is pretty skinny already, and doesn’t want to go any lower. He has learned to bake keto treats for himself as well.

I don’t try to convert anyone, if they ask, I tell them what I am doing. I am actually eating more than 20g of carbs regularly, worked my way up the Atkins ladder to @50 g per day. So far so good with that and IFing and fasting, keep the weight I lost off, almost 6 months now.

My dad, who I’d count as my biggest success. He then also converted his best friend, who was T2D but got off all of his D meds. He also started some kind of fasting/keto evangelism on FB, I’m not on there so I have no idea how many disciples he’s recruited by now.

Working on my coworker. She’s doing okay with fasting as a beginner but hits roadblocks because her eating habits have only partially improved. She asked why she’s stalled in losing weight…pretty simple really so I laid it out for her. Stop. Eating. Bread. Quit potatoes. Drop fruit. Eat meat and fat and let the other crap fall out of your life. I think it might work.

My sister…T1D, obese. I’ve been slowly working on her, she gets upset easily so I don’t push…but crazily enough her doctor told her to get her carbs under 30g per day. I think now that it’s her doc, she’s actually taking the advice to heart. I just hope she realizes this is something that has to change, and stay changed. Pizza is out, pasta is out. Breadless BLT’s for life baby.

Now, if I can get my wife, and my mother on board as well as my other sister who loves pasta and could easily slip into T2D, I would be happy as hell.

I love the trickle down effect!

Cool thread!

My little brother: 50 lbs lost this year
My friend Bobby at work: 60 lbs lost this year (he told me he was on a 900 calorie diet and the rest is history)
Bobby has inspired several people at work.
My mother-in-law, but it didn’t take.
Bobby and I presented to our company last week during a “wellness lunch & learn”… ~40 people attended. We’ll see.

[update] There’s a keto buzz around the Austin office of my company. Several individuals and couples are in their first week of keto. : )

My wife’s been on the wagon with me for 10 months now, my parents seem very interested as well and want more info. Had a guy at work ready to go then backed out last minute. I’ll bring him to the dark side yet!

My husband tested as prediabetic a few months after I went keto and it was an easy conversion after that (and he’s no longer PD, thankfully). Generally I don’t get much pushback about my diet as I don’t talk about it much IRL, but it’s been cool to see how many people in my social circle have discovered it on their own.

Congrats on your Hubby, sometimes they can be the toughest ones!

I’ve been lunching with my group of friends for over 6yrs and they are all fully aware that I only eat meat and veg at this point. I’ve trained them that if they are going to an Italian place for example, that doesn’t have at least a good salad, don’t expect me to go that week. And they can’t really argue because who can refute meat and veg, it’s healthy! I did make a point with one friend last week. She told me that she couldn’t be as stringent with her diet as I was with mine… I informed her that I’m not hard lined about it, I simply don’t have the taste or desire for that stuff anymore. period. Tastes Do Change, and that seemed novel but agreeable to her so I considered it a Keto Point Score. :smirk: I feel like I’m chipping away at mountains. Some days are better than others. LOL

My significant other. Then my mom and a friend has kinda dipped their toes a bit and have been curious but not fully jumped in. Not sure it’ll fully suit their personality. Working on some other family who all still think we’re crazy although we have noticed some warming up questions from them. I am actually a convert from my Step-Mom.

So far only my husband but hoping that will change as I get closer to my goal (had ~121 pounds to lose, still have 98 to go so it’s not super noticeable yet) but have a few friends who are interested but still in the “I could never give up x” stage and a couple who are against the HWC & butter & bacon & eggs & steak portion of my new woe…hoping they will come around as I progress, especially my lab numbers. One friend is Type 1 and is pretty much against it, hoping to find more success stories of Type 1 being well controlled with diet & less insulin.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #19

Look up Dr. Troy Stapleton, an Australian radiologist who developed Type I diabetes around forty years of age. There are several of his lectures on YouTube, and I believe he has a blog or some other kind of Web site.

We have a friend at church we converted… he also happens to be a medical doctor! (GP in Aussie terms). He first thought we were crazy.
