Been Keto for six months and doing a high carb and low fat cheat meal every two weeks for the past two months. From what I have read, try to keep the fat low on high carb meals, but that is easier said than done with normal pizza.
So is everyone planning on doing LCHF ketogenic plan for life?
I’ve been doing Keto for 10 months and haven’t cheated once. I honestly feel so good that no food could entice me to cheat. I plan on staying on it for as long as I can. I would maybe up my fruit/veggie carbs a bit over time. I’m not interested in bread or any other non veggie carb.
I’ll be on some form of low-carb high-fat indefinitely. After 45 years of yo-yo dieting, I am sick and tired of being hungry; I love the food I eat every day, and I have control over what goes in my so-aptly-termed “pie hole” for the first time in memory. Why in heck would I want to change that? In addition, inflammation is virtually gone - almost no asthma trouble any more, and I can get around well enough on my bone-on-bone arthritic knee to put off the knee replacement. It’s getting my husband off his T2D meds, as well.
I was deep in nutritional ketosis for 5 months, then 2+ years LCHF (40-50g non-starch carbs.day plus 90g-120g protein, the combo of which knocked me out of ketosis). I loved this WOE and found compliance easy, but after some digestive and sudden fat-gain problems I decided to switch things up.
After a couple of water fasts I switched off LC and tried a whole-foods, plant based diet. I expected the worst–who wouldn’t given the science–but interestingly enough I’m now 2.5 months into this experiment and my digestion, weight and body comp have all improved. I’m not convinced the improvement is all diet-related (I suspect sex hormones and thyroid are at play) BUT I do think one dietary change has been a huge benefit to me: My 23&Me raw data indicates that I am not well suited for a diet high in saturated fat, and that if I eat a high saturated fat diet, I’m likely to be over fat. This is probably why I was seeing increased visceral fat with a LCHF diet.
So, to answer your question, I’m a fan of switching this up. Keto for a while, LCHF for a while, whole-foods plant based for a while, IF daily and extended fasts from time to time. For me, this works well.
I see references like ‘I’ll never go back to SAD’. No one in their right mind would, but there are so many other WOE besides SAD. It’s not the only alternative to keto.
Amen to that, that’s why it’s easier for me to stay closer to zero carb
Suzanne! - That is fascinating to hear of your journey. It is a good reminder to stay open minded to other options and that it’s important to listen to our bodies. Thanks for sharing that -I sometimes wonder if I should try to modify the diet a bit since I feel tired or too heavily indulged in fat but worry that it would be bad. Like being in AA and having a drink of alcohol!!
I am interested n the 23&me so might start there.
Yep! Like many others I will likely experiment with adding in a bit more veg (not really bothered about fruit but fo miss a lot of vehgies), but I’m actually feeling good these days so don’t think going back to SAD is an option.
been at it for just over 7 months and don’t plan on getting off it til at least I am under 200 lbs, have lost 145 to get to my current 305. I can see this being my eating style 95 % of the time from here on out. just too many advantages to doing it IMO
Shiritaki noodles, Yum, you can have them & your shrimp now, just make it yourself
Yes, I want to reach my 100+ birthday in good physical and mental health. I promised my kids I would bug them for as long as possible, telling them what to eat and to dress warm. They don’t think I’ll make it that long, so game on! I also want to maximize my retirement and social security benefits by living past what the actuarial tables say I should live to. Keto isn’t all about the food .
On LCHF now for 4 years, planning to do it for life. Not wanting that old body back.
Once I’ve lost enough weight to be well out of the danger zone and my diabetes is under control, I plan to experiment with incorporating fresh fruit into my diet occasionally (like twice a month or so) and see how that goes, as fruit is the only thing I really miss at this point. Other than that, I’d be surprised if I ever stray too far from keto, as it has seriously changed my relationship with food and my body, and I would hate to lose that.
I am still in the weight loss phase, so it is hard to look beyond strict Keto. So I think what is going to happen when I get to maintenance will be a combination of IF/EF/Keto, lazy keto and the occasional healthy carbs. The approach I take will vary depending on what is needed at the time to maintain my weight and sense of well being.
Keto has completely changed my relationship with food. I eat for fuel now. I also feel strongly that my body has to take breaks from eating which is why fasting has also become important. I think I need to maintain some form of keto for life. I still have stressful times that push me towards poor eating choices. I still have a sugar addiction. I still have a sugar allergy (insulin resistence)…all of these things need to be maintained and I don’t think I can just stop attending to them. Keto allows me to keep these issues under control.
True, and thank you for your post! I actually wonder if cycling through diet variations might not be quite healthy. SAD wouldn’t be one of them, I’m not thinking about eating junk. Keto, paleo, Mediterranean, vegetarian, and maybe a couple of others that can be healthy either short term or longer term. After all, we don’t go to the gym and do only curls for 15 years, we mix it up, change things every so often. The body adapting to new and appropriate challenges makes it grow.
Been keto for 1 year. Love it. Added IF 2 months ago. Love it, too! I am just 5 lbs shy of my ideal weight. I am just doing final reshaping. IF great as that autophagy is taking care of some loose skin. Mind clear, high energy. Why would I ever quit? I have some carbs eating dinner out a couple times a month.
Plan to continue as I really like all the benefits and they way I am feeling. As “SAD” is really SAD in my book. I start 6 plus months ago and cannot see a reason to change love the food, and at where I want to be in weight so basically in maintenance.
Congrats!
So great to hear about everyones success stories and investment to keep HCLF.
It’s also nice to hear how everyone makes the program theirs! I, too, have added a few fruits and carbs here and there. If I have KETO as the foundation of my diet - life is good!
