Good food for thought. Sometimes I feel like I could stay on it forever but other times I feel like I don’t want to. Right now I’m in the latter. I can do without veggies (I’m doing mostly zero carb/carnivore), fruit, bread, rice, pasta, etc—I don’t really miss them much. But I do miss cookies and cakes and sweets. I know it’s possible to be on Keto and still occasionally indulge in those things, especially if you make high fat versions, but the problem is that I can’t control portions once I start eating them. My goal is to get to a place where I can maybe do 20-30 carbs a day, allowing for small indulgences like that, without losing control. If I could get there, I think it could be maintained for life.
So is everyone planning on doing LCHF ketogenic plan for life?
Does any other regimen even claim to lower inflammation as much as keto?
I’m persuaded by the idea of winter/summer adaptations and can see myself cycling between keto and plant based with IF to keep my insulin down.
A high carb diet will reduce inflammation. Well, first it kills you, but after that inflammation goes away.
The two don’t have to be mutually exclusive, although plant based keto isn’t easy.
I chose the easy way and went more carnivore. I’ve never felt better in my life.
I’m pretty carnivorous now, while in Keto. I’m curious how best to eat when out of it – I’m trying to determine if I should stay low carb, maybe on the edge of ketosis, or if I should high-carb it with lots of fruits and starchy vegetables. Either way, I’ll stick with whole foods and avoid the processed carbs and added sugar.
I think that’s the key for maintenance. I’m figuring when that day finally comes that I’m close to my goal, I’ll probably transition to more paleo.
There was an interview on the diet Doctor site years ago (I can’t remember who with), but they said “potato’s won’t make you fat, but they will prevent you from losing weight”.
Yep, 4 life… I don’t want a refund of my misery (specifically of how I used to feel b4 my keto life).
Yes, we plan on eating this way for the rest of our lives. We’ve seen what eating the SAD diet causes and Keto has fixed it all. No reason to put ourselves through that ever again.
If I stop eating keto I feel dreadful. Inflammation flares. Reactive hypoglycaemia comes back. Then I gain weight. Energy levels drop. Food cravings start.
So unless someone comes up with a way of eating that avoids all those, I expect I will be somewhere on the keto/carnivore/IF spectrum for ever.
Absolutely, totally agree. So, eating this way is the plan. Not perfect yet, but getting there.
I have been doing keto for about a year. I had been paleo for about 6 years. When I went keto I was already pretty much close to my desired weight after losing 35 pounds. I have added IF and noticed mental clarity, and more energy, and can see reduction in fat on my tummy. I eat out once about every 10 days and exceed my low carb target once a week. Perfect combination. My blood numbers are perfect. I will stick with this for the foreseeable future.
Yes. In fact in the past I have been carnivore. Now I’m not saying I will never stray. If I get at maintenance I think having a sweet potato every now and then will be okay. My three month victory is already planned-Thai shrimp with noodles. Maybe more. But I’m at one month and already know this works. Even diets that call Keto extreme recommend cutting carbs. I think we’re onto something here - for life.
I am doing a bit of cyclical Keto. I do two non-Keto meals each month, two weeks apart. Tonight was Round Table Pizza, and two weeks ago it was a spaghetti meal. I look forward to those two cheat meals, and it keeps me going. I am down 40 pounds in six months and feel 20 years younger. It works for me, but your mileage may vary.
Other than cheat days, most likely. I can probably handle more carbs then keto, problem is most “healthy” carbs don’t appeal to me and I mainly prefer meat and cheese. Keep it simple works for me.
Love that. It syncs well with the concept of keto being a lifestyle and not just a diet. Live life, KCKO
I agree that man made foods are by and large poison, primarily made up of concentrated sugar, dubious additives and vast quantities of cheap, gmo, nutrition-stripped starchy carbs. No need to eat any of that, EVER. But RobC’s approach makes sense to me. I could see adding modest quantities of organic fruit, ‘ancient’ grains and things like sweet potatoes, snap peas and carrots to my diet seasonally. … maybe next year.
Lifer, Started with Atkins about 10 years ago but technically was pretty much always keto since I was always in the induction phase of it minus a couple times which backfired. As it’s been said, WOE, not a diet. If you spend your time, one, getting awesome recipes so you don’t fall into the very false idea of this being restrictive is a big one. Past that learning the science and listening to all the studies done not only on our WOE, but what eating “normal” is really doing to people, how the hell can you do that to yourself? It would be like an athletic person who eat clean deciding to be sedentary and pick up smoking. It’s just and insane thing to do at every level.
