3 weeks in, completely cut out breads and a lot of carbs (absolute sugar/carb addict) but the last week, especially the last couple days, I’ve been so cranky, the poor kids have copped the brunt of it coz I’m so quick to snap when the little things normally wouldn’t bother me. I think I’m eating enough, I don’t feel hungry, I don’t know whether I’m not quite drinking enough, I’m going through around 8-10 glasses a day. It’s quite concerning coz it’s not my normal temperament at all. They’re still quite small (nearly 5 and under) so taking 5 minutes to clear my head is out of the question…
Any advice? I’m about to take a drove to the shop and get into the chocolate and biscuits.
So cranky
Hey Trina,
I’ve got little ones so I know what you mean, mine are just a few years older.
Anyway, my question is electrolytes. I noticed you drink plenty of water but are you getting enough salt? Potassium and magnesium are big, too.
Electrolytes being off can cause all sorts of problems.
Hmmm, I don’t know, I add salt to my sauces for dinner, and a bit in my scrambled eggs but maybe it’s not enough. I’ll try some electrolyte and see if that helps, I hate being cranky and I know I’m being irrational but can’t help it.
Remember that in the early stages you pee out a lot of salt and minerals.
I even add salt to my coffee now and sometimes if I’m feeling a little “off” I’ll go have some salt.
Not sure if this helps at all but I hope it does.
I’m willing to give it a go, I’m so new to this, hubby wanted to do it so I’m along for the ride and I could stand to cut back on the junk anyway, I don’t drink coffee, only the occasional tea, it’s water water water in this house lol. I’d prefer to try extra salt then to completely derail, I’ve been so proud of myself for not caving and grabbing maccas or a sandwich.
What kind of sauces?
Creamy white sauce, creamy tomato sauce (I make my own so it’s got no added sugar) stock based sauces, alfredo sauce.
Okay. Tomatoes are sugary on their own. Stock can be carby depending on what was the base. Alfredo carbs can add up.
The thing about this is, if you don’t give it a full go, it’s not going to work. By a full go, it’s keeping carbs to ketogenic levels for a few weeks at least. The Atkins induction list is a good method for getting to ketosis and building out once there. The old list.
Thank you, Im trying, it’s a big adjustment for me always adding piles of pasta to a dish etc, I’ve started making my own sauces so I know what goes into them, and I’ve been reading labels to see how many carbs are in them for my stock and cream and cheese, so I don’t think they’re too big numbers, i haven’t been tracking my carbs too stricly but I’d say it’s under 30 a day.
I don’t make too much with tomato based sauces coz I did see thatwbas on the higher list, I stick with mostly cream based ones. Maybe I’ll just do away with sauces for the time being and just use butter and oil and mayo.
Dr. Stephen Phinney talks about ideal salt intake being around 3 grams -and that more - like up to 5 grams - is better than too little. You can take a teaspoon of coconut oil straight with salt and it’s pretty yummy - or just snack on salt sprinkled into your palm.
This is something old fashioned that helps me and might help you for keeping up the good salt intake (which has huge impacts on the whole nervous system): get ahold of some good stock cubs/bouillon/consomme (I love Kallo brand myself) - and treat yourself to a mug of it w/ a tblsp of fat every afternoon when you need refreshment.
It’s super salty, and seasoned so tasty - and really enhances the salt levels. The regular formula of their chicken stock has 1600 mg of sodium per cube. I also really like their mushroom flavor. Very refreshing.
Eat fat to satiety, it’ll nourish your brain amazingly. Get in the habit of adding fats of all kinds to smoothies, salads, on top of fatty meats. Eat fatty avocado along with foods if you can, it’s very satisfying too.
And don’t forget that you can always make “Keto-Aid”, an electrolytic brew, and drink plenty of it as you navigate the early months of fat-adaptation (it can take many months for people to reach full 100% fat-adaptation, and in the meantime eating fat to satiety and salt galore can make the difference between cranky and mellow).
I got cranky last week. Recommendations were more water, so I went to ketoaide and within a few hours was back to my keto happiness.

Thanks everyone, I’ll up my water, add salt/electrolytes and watch my numbers on carbs, hopefully I’ll be in a better mood.
Find a quality magnesium supplement. My other half gets horrible to be around when he forgets to take magnesium, it can be huge for mood
