Skim fat off bone broth?

(Colin) #1

When drinking bone broth during a fast, should I be removing the fat layer, or is it okay to drink that too?

My wife and I are both doing it, she’s trying to lose weight, while I’m trying to avoid losing weight.

Thanks

Since the impact of fat on insulin is so low as to be negligible, I don’t think it really matters. Some people feel that the caloric value of fat compromises a fast, but it depends on your goals for fasting whether that’s a problem or not.

I used to drink bone broth/stock when fasting, and never worried too much about the fat. I stopped drinking it when I realized sometimes it would make me hungry. If that doesn’t happen to you (and it didn’t for a long time for me), then keep using it.

If you do decide to skim off the fat, make sure to save it in the fridge for later. It’s delicious and nutritious as an addition to many menu items once the eating resumes.
