Sick...High Ketones, OK Blood Sugar

Been doing keto on and off for last 6mo.
I do not have diabetes and am in good health

Have had this same experience a few time’s now where I was OK and firmly in Ketosis 15-40 mg/dL then I will get ill.

Last night symptoms built up into AM: didnt sleep all night, No energy, stomach pains, wanted to puke, i shit myself😁
…in AM noticed incredible thirst.

when using keto strip it will turn darkest purple INSTANTLY. no response time. so 160+mg/dL

This AM for first time during these spells I tested blood glucose@96. So apparently not DKA

Usually I wait it out.

Today I drank a couple glasses of water and within an hour-ish I felt a lot better. Keto strips then started showing normal 15-40 range.

May be kicking myself out of keto from too many carbs and my body stops using ketones and they build up? iDK. Didn’t think that happened. Thought the body used up what energy it could.

Any ideas on what’s going on?

Just to be (maybe) helpful I included what I ate yesterday in order:

I drink plenty of water and coat my foods in salt.

AM
-500 cal ribeye
-(1 slice-of-bread-sized) piece fatty pork with olive oil dressing
-cup of asparagus drenched in olive oil+garlic
-1T c8 oil+1T coconut oil+2T cream+3T whole milk

PM
-(1 slice-of-bread-sized) piece fatty pork with olive oil dressing
-small salad with 2T olive oil/vinegar
-1T c8 oil+1T coconut oil+2T cream+1/4C whole milk
-cup of tea with1 TEAspoon sugar, 1T cream, cinnamon
-1teaspoon olive oil
-1T butter
-1T c8, 1.5 T coconut oil, 2T cream, 1/4C whole milk
-4T almond butter (Justin’s no sugar)

Sounds like dehydration. Are you drinking enough water and getting enough salt? If it is, this is serious and you need to get checked out.

Yeah I put a ton of salt on stuff and drink a lot of water. Try to carry around a gallon jug. At least 8-12 glasses of water a day and yesterday as well.

Could not say with 100% certainty.

I don’t get hungry like before. In the past some days I have low energy.

I have had good energy levels lately though.

Looks like you’re drinking a lot of milk. Even whole milk has quite a bit of carbs. I agree with @mtncntrykid, sounds like dehydration.

You didn’t mention your water consumption and symptoms suggested it.
Hydration can affect pee strips and cause dark readings. Loss of bowel control can be hydration related. And you mentioned a couple glasses of water relieved some of the symptoms.

Ah ok. Yeah my pee is pretty clear colored. It is pretty clear when testing with ketone strips.

I drink quite a bit of water. Ten or more 12oz glasses a day. (Thanks! I updated my original post to reflect this )

Don’t put a lot of value in pee strips as measuring.

So probably not fat adapted depending on how long you’ve been “on”.

How long have you been taking that much MCT and coconut oil? I know C8 is supposedly more gentle, but I believe it can still cause internal issues. Including but not limited to the disaster pants you experienced.

It’s not so much that I put value on the accuracy it’s more that I felt horrible was the important thing. I just included pee strip info to possible assist anyone kind enough to answer. (Thank you!)

But to elaborate I got a bunch of these strips and have checked pretty much every time i pee. Once in Ketosis they always show between 1.5-4.0.

And then this AM and in past spells when I felt like complete shit the reagent strip shows incredibly dark purple immediately.

No disaster pants for me. More nausea/diarrhea/abdominal pain/lack of energy.

I cannot remember for certain but it might be this thing might come after consumption of c8 oil.

I often use that much c8 and am fine howeverexcept these few times I get I’ll. I don’t seem to use anymore than usual. .

Been using it for a couple months when on keto diet usually daily. Some days I have low energy and think it may help.

I don’t get why sometimes my levels seem to rise so highly though.

I also would question if you have allowed your body to adapt to burning fat instead of glucose for fuel. The body prefers glucose until you allow it time to learn how to use fat, and bouncing in and out of ketosis without adaption is going to affect you similar to your description.

Following my last post, if your bouncing in and out of ketosis your body is confused and doesn’t know what to do with the ketone bodies it is creating and since it doesn’t know how to metabolize them it just expels them in the urine. (thus high readings)

I wonder how fat adapted I am as well. I’m probably not well enough at least.

So I could possibly be not well enough fat adapted and after ingesting coconut oil and c8 my body could not be properly using that energy and then it builds up inside me causing problems?

The body can’t store c8 so if it doesn’t know properly how to use it and I get a little more of it than usual is that what you’re saying?

C8 has a direct line and does not have to be processed by the liver to be used, but if the body doesn’t know how to use it then you could feel bad and get diarrhea from a higher amount. I rarely use more that a T of it during a daily intake.

Oh wow I totally misunderstood what that term meant. I was thinking of a panic attack: panting like an overheated dog+thinking of disaster.

Excessive breathing is a symptom of DKA and I’m pretty dumb!
