Shoulder tendonitis and keto or carnivore diet

You can have kefir and yogurt on a keto diet? Does it have to be in small quantities? if so how much typically in a day? Thank you

#304

Of course one can have them on keto and as the mentioned ones are carby dairy items, it can’t be a huge amount unless one’s allowance is higher.

#305

One’s allowance? I don’t get an allowance anymore…lol

Full fat, plain Greek yogurt has a pretty good amount of protein and not too many carbs.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #307

Read the nutrition label for the carb content, and limit accordingly. I enjoy full-fat, unflavoured Greek yoghurt. Minimal carb content, and it’s so rich in fat that less than one serving (defined by the manufacturer as 6 liquid ounces) is quite satisfying.

Plain yogurt has few carbs, but the goat yogurt I have been using is thickened with a little tapioca starch, so it has about 10 gr of carbs per serving. I add to that with some carbs from berries usually. Altogether, the mixture is about 8 oz. As I have indicated I am currently not strict keto, so I ignore those carbs as I feel the ketone making ability of goat yogurt more than makes up for them. I don’t recall the carb amount in kefir… I used that after my surgery about two years before doing keto. The MCTs in goat yogurt is what I attribute my continuing fat burning to. I feel it is a kind of secret to metabolic health and longevity. Apparently, the Lord knew what He was doing when he made the Israelites goat and sheep shepherders.

As I have indicated, you can basically have whatever carbs you want. The source is not terribly important, but I do try to limit mine to ā€œhealthyā€ carbs with fiber, etc. I basically tried to limit mine to about 50 gr of carbs per day while doing keto, although towards the end I was probably going over - I was only measuring ā€œtraceā€ or ā€œminorā€ ketosis by that point because I felt my strength and muscle building had stalled, so I added some more carbs. Incidentally, my strength then did increase some more, so it seemed to work, but at the end of Feb I stopped my official keto, upon which my weight immediately shot up 6-7 lbs with glycogen and water weight. So I know I had technically been in ketosis up to that point - probably doing around 60-65 gr of carbs per day - at least on my recovery days.

About 2 yrs ago here is what some of the probiotics I took had:
Lactobacillus and Lactococcus Blend (20 billion CFU†) (L. acidophilus UALa01ā„¢, L. acidophilus DDSĀ®, L. casei, L. paracasei UALpc04 UAS, L. plantarum UALp05ā„¢, L. rhamnosus UALr-06, L. salivarius UALs07 UAS, L. lactis, L. gasseri, L. helveticus Rosell-52, L. helveticus, L. fermentum, L. fermentum Lf-33, L. reuteri, L. bulgaricus, L. brevis) 100 mg *
Proprietary Bifidobacterium Blend (8.5 billion CFU†) (B. lactis UABla12ā„¢, B. lactis, B. infantis, B. animalis, B. bifidum UABb10ā„¢, B. breve, B. longum) 39 mg *
Saccharomyces boulardii (0.5 billion CFU†) 25 mg *
Streptococcus thermophilus (1 billion CFU†)

Saccharomyces boulardii is a type of fungus found in tropical fruit. It has been shown to have limiting effects on various bad guys in the human gut - protecting the gut lining. I also took Securil - which contains one strain known for making vitamin B12.
I also took a spore forming probiotic with: Saccharomyces boulardii, Bacillus clausii, Bacillus subtilis HU58ā„¢, Bacillus coagulans HCā„¢.
I also took another single patented form of Bacillus subtilis I got off Amazon.
I also took a Life Extension probiotic with bacteriophages.
Then whatever probiotics were in the kefirs I drank - I found those most beneficial for relieving gas pain and bloating I was having at the time.
There were a few more - mostly providing more of the same strains above. One had about 34 strains supposedly. So, it was a bit of expense and trouble to recover from that round of antibiotics - which is why I am very protective of my gut health.

I eat it all. I also eat gristle and every bit of connective tissue in the meat.

Full fat sour cream is good too. Maybe full fat mozzarella, ricotta cottage cheese and cream cheese too?

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #312

Since the key to a ketogenic diet is keeping insulin low by limiting carbohydrate intake, you can eat what you want, as long as you keep your carbs below your tolerance threshold. We recommend a limit of no more than 20 g/day.

There are a lot of tweaks to make this diet the best it can be, such as eating whole, real foods, limiting polyunsaturated fats, avoiding sugar, and so forth, but the essence is to limit carbohydrate, get a reasonable amount of protein, and fill in with fat to satisfy your hunger. If full-fat mozzarella, ricotta, and cream cheese will meet those goals for you, then why not eat them? On the other hand, if there is something about them that you do not trust, then don’t eat them. The choice is yours.

All comes down to must read labels. I enjoy a hazelnut ice coffee but I know it has sugar and carbs so I only have a few sips daily.

My shoulder has been feeling much better lately so I know the keto diet is worth the change in lifestyle.

Although I’m not working out, my tricep has become more toned because I’m using my arms to lift and reach for things I couldnt do for a long time due to pain.

Microwave oven for reheating meats:
Some believe microwave ovens destroy the nutrient value of foods. I most often ONLY use the microwave to reheat already cooked meats, 30 sec to a minute. Do you think using the microwave to reheat foods this way destroys the nutritional value.? Thank you

#315

There are always going to be people that say that microwaved food is bad, but I think there have been studies that concluded that microwaved food actually retained more nutrients than food cooked with direct heat.

I don’t personally use the microwave very often other than some occasional reheating or defrosting, but that’s just because it doesn’t feel like ā€˜real’ cooking to me, and I love to cook ; )

#316

Same here. I only use it for reheating. Love to cook. Plus the texture’s not the same when you cook foods in the microwave. I discovered you don’t have to thaw most foods you can cook frozen. Except of course large thick foods like a roast beef need to be thawed. Whereas filet fish, steaks and chops can be cooked right from the freezer to the pan or oven. Just take longer.

Breakfast
Can you suggest some keto friendly diet selections for breakfast that DON’T include eggs?
Thank you

#318

I’ve never really clung to the belief that breakfast should only consist of specific food types, and now that I’m on OMAD/2MAD, that’s even more the case.

I’d say just eat anything keto you want to eat ĀÆ_(惄)_/ĀÆ

Depending on when you eat, I guess anything Keto that is an easy prep or just ready and waiting : )

#319

Any food choices? I tried a little hummus and guacamole but not very satisfying.

Leftovers from dinner.
I recently discovered keto Non Dairy yogurt. I will have that for breakfast with a little fruit tossed on top.

#321

Why non dairy yogurt? Isn’t yogurt (dairy) part of a keto diet?

(Shawn Patrick Malone) #322

I’ve been dealing with crazy flare ups in my joints for years, mostly knees. Once I got serious with the keto diet a month or so ago it was basically gone in days. I don’t feel the need to brace my knees anymore and while they need to be replaced, feel so much better. I’m not doing anything special, just meat, eggs and veggies, a ton of steamed veggies.

#323

I’m eating exactly the same animal protein, lean and fatty, salads, steamed vegetables, eggs18 days now
How about dairy? That’s keto to I believe?
