I’ve been browsing back through my MFP food logs, and I have been eating a lot of seeds and nuts. Macadamia, almonds, pecans (my recent favorite), pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, flax seed crackers, etc. Mostly all roasted & salted. For the most part, they are keto friendly varieties. Some have a lot more protein than others, which I try to pay attention to. Is there any conventional wisdom on whether seeds and nuts should be limited?
Should seeds/nuts be limited?
I used to rely heavily on nuts when I first started LCHF. I have found they are very easy to over consume. I can eat 1,000 calories worth very quickly. It just depends on how many you are eating all at once. Having a handful now and then is okay.
What I also noticed when I first started was I was using nuts as a snack. I no longer do that. Now I will have some right after or just before a meal. This way my insulin is not staying up all day long. I try to not snack at all. I feel better doing this.
Basically eat some nuts, just be careful not to eat them in between meals frequently, and or in large quantities.
Remember that the point is to keep protein moderate and carbohydrate minimal, so that your body can go into ketosis and adapt itself to burning fat instead of glucose. As long as the nuts you eat don’t cause you to exceed your protein or carb limits, why not enjoy them? But I find that I do a minimal amount of snacking if I get enough fat during my meals to reach full satiety.
Not all nuts are the same. The lowest are macadamia, pecans, brazil and then walnuts. Almonds, while not terrible are not the lowest.
DietDoctor.com has a good diagram
Also, I try to eat raw nuts whenever possible, usually they are not cooked in the best oils since most seed oils are not good. I have never found raw macadamia nuts in my area
