I have been on the ketogenic diet for almost a month. Things are going well and I honestly love it!
However, I am wondering about exercise. Should I avoid it for now?
Should newbies avoid exercise? (for now...)
I would listen to your body, it will tell you if it is ready. Also maybe take it slow and ease into it when you do start.
@Lululovesketo you will basically get to the point where you will WANT to exercise. Though exercise is not necessary for weight loss, it is excellent for building strength and flexibility and for overall well being.
Good on you for waiting until you were well fat adapted. I always cringe when newbies start keto and jump right into 5 days a week of cardio, then wonder why they have extreme fatigue O_O
Totally got to a point where I needed to exercise… my body screamed to move more!
@Bahrutile
That is exactly what happened to me.
I bordered on hyper after awhile. Lol
Ditto. In fact, if I don’t move, I get antsy and I feel like my internal signals about food, rest, etc. are thrown off. Exercise is like my external macro.
Thank you everyone!!!
I will stick to my once a week yoga class. We get free workout classes where I work and I keep getting pressured from my co-workers to workout more. I’ve explained to them that I am waiting for my body to adapt to this WOE. But they won’t listen
I have noticed that I have more energy, I don’t get winded going up the stairs and I am walking faster!
I did keep up my workout routine while I was getting fat adapted. I think it’s individual to your body, how you feel, the level of fitness that you are accustomed to, etc.
Good luck!!! Keep up the work!!
I find that exercise helps keep me in ketosis when I’m a little outside of my macros because it uses up my glycogen stores. I work out three times a week, mostly weights…sometimes fasted.
I would say go for it! Exercise is always a good idea
I really feel like it helps me not only physically but mentally. When I’m working out I tend to have far fewer cravings for cheats.
I wouldn’t “avoid” exercise in any way. But, it isn’t going to help you lose weight (in a CICO sense). however, exercise does have many health benefits. If you want to move, move!
I started keto about 3 weeks ago and I was exercising regularly before starting. I feel that I don’t have the full energy yet but I still workout with what I feel comfortable with. It’s essential for feeling good and support mental clarity. So, If you like walking, walk. If you like crossfit, do it. just give your 80% until you feel better adjusted.
Best of health
I think it depends. When I started Keto, I intentionally did not exercise and simply concentrated on eating correctly. I did this based on research that suggested exercise isn’t a particularly good weight loss tool. Dr. Volek talks about one study in this excellent youtube video titled “Jeff Volek - The Many Facets of Keto-Adaptation: Health, Performance, and Beyond” (5:47 mark):
This is what happened to me, I couldn’t contain my energy and just had to start working out!
Keep up the good work!
I found that exercise was not necessary to lose weight on LCHF/keto. It just falls off.
Then you can begin exercising and perhaps improve body composition.
