Shocked by my bad labs

(Sheldon@katz.net) #1

Hi,

Brand new to the forum. Been Keto 7 months. Really strict not eating carbs. Results are as follows.

Weight 220 to 195
a1c 6.1 to 6.1
Fasting blood sugar 123 to 99
Total cholesterol 265 to 320
Hdl 62 to 57
LDL 160 - 240
Triglycerides 120. - 108

I’ve been told by Doc Keto is BS. Told me to eat much less fat, no butter, no eggs, no macadamia nuts no coconut oil.

I’m so confused.

Sheldon

Which numbers are you thinking are bad?

(Sheldon@katz.net) #3

A1c didn’t budge. LDL through the roof!

Give the A1C time. It’s a 3 month average, and your fasting glucose dropped, so A1C is probably soon to follow. Triglycerides are down, that’s great.

As far as LDL, search the forum for Feldman Protocol, and you’ll learn more about LDL, and why that number on its own, doesn’t necessarily mean much

The fact that HDL decreased is mildly concerning. I don’t think that LDL and total cholesterol are all that meaningful. Triglycerides are moving in the right direction. So is your weight and fasting blood sugar.

I think that maybe you should look for a new doctor.

Please, please don’t feel defeated by what your doctor said or by your labs. It’s very common for people on keto to have increased total cholesterol. Granted it would be nice if your HDL were higher so the ratio were nicer.
Look, the science proves that cholesterol is not related to diseases like heart disease or strokes. I would say the bigger things to pay attention to are your weight loss and your non scale victories.
Have you researched the other ways A1c is created and what, other than blood sugar levels, might cause it to be slightly elevated?
How do you feel physically? Emotionally?
Are you better now than before keto from your own point of view?

Keep calm and keto on

Hi,

Thanks for all the responses. I have felt great until a week ago. I’ve been having some anxiety since last Thursday, due to tinnitus and insomnia.

My wife is totally against Keto as is my Doctor. I added back some carbs this weekend, but no help with insomnia. I don’t think my latest issue has anything to do with Keto. I have had tremendous stress at work.

I will research what else can raise a1c.

Thanks

Maybe it’s the diuretics! Probably don’t need them. Blood pressure good at home, but hi at Doc. I hate going to the Doctor. My anxiety goes through the roof when I go.

Here’s a good video about cholesterol for you and your wife (and maybe even your doctor!) to watch:

Ask your doctor for an LDL particle test. Without knowing which LDL particles are giving you high numbers is like saying a 240 pound 6 foot tall guy is overweight when you don’t know if he’s fluffy or a ripped body builder. The fluffy guy is overweight. The body builder certainly isn’t. …though by uninformed numbers only appears to be.

First time posting. I have been Keto x approx. 6 months and am advised by my Primary Care MD that I am no longer PreDiabetic as my A1C was within the normal range. My sister who sees a dietician and is the family “expert on all things nutritional” had to admit she was impressed. She has been trying for years to get her A1C into the normal range with no luck. She said she will look in Keto and get back to me but I haven’t heard from her yet and it’s been over a month.

Watched “The Magic Pill” with my wife on Netflix which I have to say really helped her to understand why I am doing what I am doing with my eating. She is more supportive now though she remains reluctant to take the dive herself she has cut out a lot of carbs (like rice and potato’s) from our dinners. Yes she does most of the cooking, however I make a mean broiled Salmon that she really likes a couple times a week.
