Hey also I have a question. I typically don’t like to have to make breakfast in the morning and I used to have protein shakes in the morning prior to doing keto and I have done a lot of research and there’s a lot of different ones out there that have recipes and different keto friendly protein powder but I am curious of which one is going to be the best and also the not cheapest but not the most expensive. Also I seen a lot of the pre-made Atkins shakes in the store and they look good with the amount of carbs and the amount of protein yet they will have one gram of sugar and we typically are trying to stay away from the sugar but I’m not sure if that one gram would really even matter on the keto diet. I would love some feedback on what’s the best kind for me to get and what’s the easiest and most pocket friendly type. And also on the weekends I typically have never really eaten a lot I normally have like one meal a day so I think having a shake in the morning and being able to fast the rest of the day would actually be ok for me but I’m kind of curious of what your Insight would be on that. Any help or suggestions or even recipes would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks so much
Shakes in the morning
have you tried fat in the morning? why not replace the shake with a fatty beverage…bpc? bpt or cocoa? or just eat some fat and then fast until your meal?
i was a die hard “gotta have my protein shake” person…i’m not anymore. which is going to save me some cash lol
there have been a lot of posts about protein being insulinogenic but especially protein powders/shakes
IMO all Atkins products are crap…
if you have to have shakes…
if you’re looking for a whey protein look for whey isolate over concentrate.
Isopure is isolate with zero carbs (most flavors) and sort of a middle of the road price point
edit: and if you do have a shake add some fat to buffer the protein. almond butter, coconut/mct oil, or the likes
BPC here or Rivalus Chocolate shake with a tablespoon or 2 of heavy cream and 6 oz of almond milk. Dymatize is pretty good too.
I use a scoop of muscle pharm. combat powder with a table spoon of mct oil. Gives you about 100 fat, 36 protein and 4 carbs. Taste great and is holds me to me till lunch which is abou mid afternoon
If I do a shake I will use a casein power and mct oils as the casein is a much slower digesting protein that will lessen the insulin response and adding the fat will slow down the rate of digestion of the protein. Make sure you add quality fats if you plan to do the shake.
Additionally there has been a scandal in protien powders lately where companies are not giving you the the actual amount they claim. What has been found is that they are using amino acids and counting that towards the protein count. Make sure you do your research in finding a quality whey or casein protein.
IMO it is hard enough to keep the protein down as it is so skipping breakfast or having the fat if you need the energy would be the way to go IMO. I just think there is way too much crud in these protein powders (at least in general) let alone the protein hit and potential issues some have with whey. I am interested in the shakes that Jimmy Moore talks about bringing out that are fat filled but not protein. I see potential there for the people who like shakes. My money is on couple of T of coconut oil though
i know i saw a LCHF, moderate protein powder for sale recently but didn’t retain what it was since i have no prob adding fat
Yup I see this as an opportunity to start experimenting with IF by skipping breakfast. At this point if I feel like I need something in my belly before I leave the house I just grab a spoonful of coconut oil.
Well I just made bullet proof tea. Tastes like liquid butter. Haha. Had to add a few drops of stevia. I’m feeling full tho. So that’s good. I just can’t do coffee. Thanks for all the help and suggestions
my first bpc i felt like i needed to be dipping lobster/crab in my cup or pouring it on popcorn lol
do you use dairy or coconut/almond milk?
if so, it definitely helps the fats to not float on top if you melt the fats with the “creams” and then blend them with a stick blender or milk frother before adding the tea, cocoa, coffee
I used to use the Atkins Advantage shakes when I found them on sale. Usually, more specifically the Royal Dark Chocolate ones. These are the best tasting keto friendly shakes I’ve had. I’m a bit suspicious of some of the other Atkins Advantage products and so don’t buy them, but the shakes seem good to go.
Personally, I had no problems with ketosis with these. Some people are super sensitive to sugar that anything will cause them problems, I hear. I’m not one of them as far as I can tell, so a couple grams of sugar a day isn’t a big deal, though it’s obviously a good idea to make sure it’s as low as you reasonably can make it.
Why is it a “used to” deal?
- I started intermittent fasting and so didn’t need something for the quick morning fix,
- I really started using them to up protein on days I was low according to certain measures, but I’ve since stopped worrying so much about that given some of Dr. Jason Fung’s blogs about protein. (We’ll have to see how good of an idea it all is),
- They were also used for getting extra potassium and such when I was having trouble with that, but i found other means,
- Gave up chocolate for lent, and I don’t like any of the other flavors.
If you want to move on to not using such things, go for it. If you want to keep using them, try it out and just see if it works for you.
As for cheaper options: Premier Protein shakes are ok (not as good as the Atkins Advantage ones) and can often be found for cheaper (costco sales). They have 30 grams of Protein and less fat though, so if you need extra protein, there you go. If not, don’t go for it. Sometimes I would mix these with a bit of heavy whipping cream to give them some added fat, but usually not. (Side note: I found that making a milkshake out of these and Bryer’s CarbSmart Chocolate Ice cream, both of which taste a bit off in the chocolate, somehow magically makes a chocolate milkshake that tastes spot on. I don’t know, they fill in each others deficiencies or something).
I hear KetoChow is pretty good, but haven’t tried myself and it is a bit more expensive.
Well, if the goal is maximum nutrition while maintaining ketosis, then I have a green protein shake with the following ingredients:
Kale/spinach
Coconut oil/ mct oil
Vega protein and greens powder
Hemp hearts
Almond milk
Avocado
Just need a lower carb, non whey version of the Vega protein powder. Sometimes I go without but I prefer the taste with.as long as you limit the carbs the rest of the day, this is a great shake to start the day on a right note.
2 cups Kale/spinach
1 tbsp Coconut oil/ mct oil
1 scoop Vega protein and greens powder
2-4 tbsp Hemp hearts
8 oz Almond milk
1 small Avocado
Add water to the shake if it’s too thick.
If you really want to boost your immune system, add the following ingredients… I recommend doing this only after you get used to the shake listed above first :
1 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp black pepper
An inch of Ginger
3 cloves of garlic
The taste may change when you add these other ingredients, but the benefits are worth it.
