There is a podcast called Science VS. They are starting their new season on 3/22/2018. One of the upcoming Podcasts is going to be about Biohacking your body with the Keto Diet.
Science VS
I like that podcast. Sometime during last season I heard they were working on an episode related to fasting, but iI never heard it. Maybe this season.
Just to let you know Science VS podcast next week… last week of April is about the Keto Diet and it sounds as though it will be Very positive toward Keto.
I will post link next week…
I hope the show does an unbiased show. Gastropod mentioned Keto with a very status quo point of view. the sound bite they chose sounds interesting.
The blurb said that Keto was awesome… if it were a drug it would sell billions. I am paraphrasing.
Here is the link… I haven’t even listened to it yet…

It’s 33 minutes…
Comments?
Give it a miss. They didn’t take it too seriously or dig into it very much and only interviewed one person who was pro Keto and not a deep interview at that.
For a show promoting itself as science-based they didn’t bother with any science. Their conclusion on why keto works for weight loss was calories in calories out.
I listened to the show today and literally came to the forums to talk about it and searched and found this topic.
For a show that prides itself on “the science”, this was utter crap. It literally makes me rethink even subscribing to the show. If they do this bad of a job with something that I can “fact check” them on, I wonder how they might be misleading me elsewhere.
@lecody2001 is right, they didn’t take it too seriously, and @jjjobst is also 100% accurate that they assumed CICO was what made the diet effective. They didn’t really attempt to understand the science, they made no effort to understand the meta-analysis that is out there about comparing diets that the dudes have put on their Show me the Science! page and have talked about on the podcast.
They made no effort to understand or explain the insulin hypothesis vs the lipid hypothesis and they really fell down where it counted. They played Dom D’Agostino’s quote about “if a drug did what Keto does, it would be worth billions” (or something like that), but they didn’t even bother to understand why some of the more detailed trials haven’t been done… NO ONE MAKES MONEY FROM THIS!
Fasting is free. Cutting out sugar and making carb-free choices isn’t really making anyone rich. It isn’t available for hundreds of dollars a month at the local pharmacy.
I’m literally typing this and getting more and more angry about how lax and irresponsible the show was. I’d write to them, but I’m sure I’d be dismissed as a “quack”, “fan”, or “raving lunatic”. I mean, even the way they quoted D’Agostino as saying he “oversells the benefits of Keto because he’s a fan”… COME ON.
You don’t have to oversell anything. I feel like they really have turned the show into “Science Vs vs Science”. They’re more interested in going for a wisecrack than doing research.
I’m just about finished listening to this episode. I’m unsubscribing from the feed after this. I mean how bad their Google skills are if they missed so much that we’ve heard. They are even Aussies.
Reminds me of the general rule of reporting, if reporters are covering something you know about you will learn how terrible they are at their job.
I have found that shows that usually are intelligent and interesting like SciShow, have a shockingly basic knowledge of biochem when they cover dieting. They just regurgitate the CICO line with no mention of critical hormones and metabolic pathways. Maybe it’s a rare oversight of an otherwise knowledgeable show, or perhaps they make other blunders but I don’t catch them because I’m not obsessed with the subject.
I really like this podcast, but this episode was terrible. So disappointed. Can’t really add to what others have already said.
Honestly I am considering emailing them and dropping the podcast. It really sucked. I didn’t notice any real science and they certainly did little research before they made up their minds.
Plus no mention of coconut oil. No wonder she gagged over the olive oil…which I understand is usually adulterated.
I am also kind of upset that I even started this thread.
I’m sooooo bummed about this episode! I love this podcast and was really annoyed that they didn’t speak to the science of insulin. I’m also annoyed that they made it sound SO difficult to eat keto - like, hellooooo bacon and eggs!!! Maybe let’s all send them emails???
I actually emailed Gimlet about how bad the episode was. I may or may not hear from them.
