Same diet - different results

#1

After three weeks of keto I’ve only had minimal weight loss, most of which occurred in the first week. Years ago I had significant success with Atkins Diet… But now since I’m North of 40 it’s just not the same… And I feel much better educated now than ever.
I have moderate ketones in my urine most of the time (and yes, I know this isn’t the best standard for measuring - I finally blew breath acetate last week, as well.)
I typically only eat dinner and take Exogenous ketones along with coffee and MCT oil for breakfast.
I feel good, and only weigh every 4-5 days - anticipating a good drop in weight each time, only to be disappointed again.

I check my urine ketones at least once a day, usually in the morning, the longest time from ingesting my last Exogenous ketones - so as not to get a false positive. I have plenty of fat to lose, so it’s not like I’m stalled for that reason

Any ideas?

My first idea is to take measurements instead of relying on the scale. Scales don’t measure fat loss.

My second idea: have you read up on exogenous ketones? Unless you’re an athlete, they don’t seem necessary but there’s a lot of controversy and discussion about this.

My third/main idea: if you feel good and have evidence that you’re in ketosis, great! just KCKO

I personally would lose the exogenous ketones. There are folks in both camps, but I figure if I can make my own I’m not going to buy any. I’m poor and a penny-pincher. :smiling_imp:

Your body obviously has a different agenda than you do. If you’re sticking to your macros and eating enough to release fat stores, then something else is going on. Restructuring, fixing a fatty liver, repairing a leaky gut - who knows? Just be patient and KCKO. It’s not a race.

Are you eating at the same time every day? I’ve heard rumors of needing to change this up to kind of “shock” your body.

What is your keto goal? Lose weight? Heal a particular health condition? Maybe your body is working of things you need while you’re “stalled.”

You didn’t say if you are counting calories as well? Perhaps you aren’t consuming enough calories? I know it seems counter productive but when I first started keto I sort of leveled out (stalled) for a bit and I was being extremely strict but was only consuming about 1200 calories. As an experiment I decided to add just a 100 calories a day to see what would happen and started losing again…

So you can experiment a little as well to see what might work.

It took me 6 weeks to even become fat adapted when I started burning body fat more regularly. 3 weeks is early days, definitely hang in there!

I agree with the idea of ditching the extra ketones. And three weeks is just getting started.

It’ll probably sneak up on you when you’re not paying much attention.

KCKO.

I’m not counting calories. I do understand the importance of eating to satiety… I’m definitely getting enough.
Thanks for the response

Thoroughly agree with this. As @Richard says, for most people “Exogenous ketones are like driving to the end of a marathon and then splashing sweat on yourself and expecting the results from running the race” :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I’m investigating them for my dad in an attempt to boost short term brain function vs. dementia/brain damage though I don’t hold out much hope.

Personally, I am not able to lose weight while eating Keto to satiety, I can only maintain. I have to fast in order to lose weight. I have also recently incorporated exercise and gained weight (but not size).
