Salty coffee

(David Pegg) #1

Following last episodes discussion, I am enjoying my salty coffees

Anyone else doing the same?

I added pink Himalayan salt to my cup along with the cream. I am fasting and I have had a great day. Will be having it again.

I didn’t notice any kind of off putting taste, but I do love me some salt. In the podcast he mentioned he thought it cut the bitterness of the coffee. Coffee doesn’t taste bitter to me in the first place so not sure about that claim.

I brew my daily pot of coffee in a chemex pour over coffee pot, with cinnamon, sea salt, and cayenne in the grounds.

I like the result.

I’ve done the cinnamon and salt but haven’t tried cayenne yet. That sounds really good!

Since that episode I have gone back to salted nuts. I had got used to unsalted because that was healthier … but now I have learned to trust the signals. Sometimes I will add salt, sometimes not. It feels good.

Salted coffee is still an untried option.

I make capsules of pink salt and take several a day as I don’t like the salty taste, but do know how much better I feel since supplementing salt - recovery much faster too.

So after listening to the podcast, I bought some of the himalayan salt, and had a little bit every morning, but just finished my lunch and got myself an espresso, and thought i’ll just add in some salt; Don’t its horrid, I get that in BPC or another keto coffee it would be ok, but not into straight espresso, its just wrong!

I need to do this as well. I was looking at some big bags of pink salt at TJ Maxx but skipped over them… then I listed to the podcast! Whoops

I use salt in my coffee to cut the bitterness since learning of this, and it works (makes it smoother)! I usually cold brew my coffee so there is no bitterness, but when I buy out or have to brew it regularly, salt is a big help.

(jilliangordona) #10

Cold brew really is a game changer isn’t it? Its smoothness still blows me away!

(Jim) #11

Cold brew rocks

(Julie Pegler) #12

salt does cut the bitterness, I have been doing it for years before keto, in Starbux cuz its so bitter!

(Dustin Bowen) #13

I add about a 1/4 tsp of Lite Salt to my black coffee in the morning and it tastes amazing. Like other mentioned it cuts the bitterness down quite a bit. And as a bonus I get some potassium! I buy Camerons Highlander Grog flavored coffee so it kind of tastes like salted caramel without the sugar… I need to try it with some HWC now and see how the flavors are.

I bought some at TJ Maxx and I have to say, I think the quality isn’t all that great… it’s cheap, for sure, but since I’m eating it straight, I’d prefer higher quality. My husband and I both felt there were times we were eating pieces of rock and not salt. Weird. Just some thoughts…

(jilliangordona) #15

I wondered this, thanks for the heads up.

Ive been drinking salty coffee for about a month now. Carrie Brown had suggested doing that to cut the bitterness of the coffee so I thought Id give it a try and see how it was. I find I like the bit of saltiness and now since listening to the most recent podcast, 2 wins for salty coffee!!

Anyone live on the west coast? I’m obsessed with this drink (no sugar, of course!)

I must have missed where he suggested how much… so how much salt is everyone adding? And of which salt? Celtic? Pink Himalayan? A little bit of both to get benefits of both?? Thanks.

(Just FYI - we have been bringing salt crystals to work outs and on hikes for years - really helps. It also helps to suck on a small salt crystal when nauseous - we have been doing that for years too.)

When I brew, I use the following for a pot (4 cups of water, 6tbsp of ground coffee):

  • Between 1tsp - 1/2 Tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground cayenne pepper

all sprinkled on top of the grounds before pouring the water.

I’m thinking next time I do a water fast, I may try increasing the salt both to make it easier to have the coffee black, as well as to get some extra salt, since I tend to need more when fasting.

I’ve always just used Salted butter… i used unsalted butter once it was not good…
