I am running a 5k in Baltimore, MD tomorrow. I am 6 weeks Keto. I usually run 3 miles 4-5 days a week on the evenings. I was “thinking” of a higher carb breakfast before the race. Looking for any thoughts on this? Not really sure of my reasoning? Just seems to make sense. My energy level has returned this last week (fat adapted?) and looking for a better time tomorrow. Any thoughts or experiences greatly appreciated👍
Running 5k tomorrow. Carbs?
At six weeks fat adaption is iffy so if you are having fun I say go for it wit out carbs. If you are competitive you can do a carb boost before. It is short so you will be fine either way. Good luck!
Will do! Just going to do my regular this morning. Going to start If Monday.
On a recent podcast I heard that using carbs for performance (while on keto) in a run can be a good thing - especially if you are very fast. Not worth it if you are just in it to finish.
But, they also said you shouldn’t just have carbs before the next big race. Instead, you should have carbs in the weeks before - before practice runs, to see how you’ll react. You don’t want stomach upset or bloating while trying to get a new official personal best.
More of a “personal best” for me. I have been running again for several months now. My times in my late teens and 20’s in Marine Corps were under 6 minute miles. Now, in my late 40’s and much heavier, it was hard to break 10 minute miles when I started. My last 5k I was about 8 minute average. We’ll see. Had a “Keto coffee” and a homemade “keto” almond flour everything Bagle my wife makes… (amazing by the way).
Personal best!!! 2 minutes faster than last 5k. Placed 3rd for my age group and 24th out of 200.feel great. Endurance is back!!! Thanks everyone.
Actually there a free e many athletes that swear by being keto and that their performance is better sustained than being on carbs.
Small amount. But didn’t “carb up”.
I had keto coffee and homemade Keto Bagle.
My version Keto coffee (delicious)
Coffee, 1tsp cacao powder, pinch pink himalayan salt, 1tbs coconut oil, 1tbs Ghee, pinch of cinnamon, 1tbs monk fruit sweetener, couple drops of vanilla. Then blend it in bullet… Awesome.
Bagle:
Keto Fat head dough (almond flour) , Mozzarella cheese and everything Bagle spice.
*I’m not sure of all the ingredients in Bagle… My wife made them
I prefer training and exercising in a fasted state. I feel so much better because my body isn’t trying to digest food and then keep me moving. If you are fat adapted I would just say no lol. I bike 20 to 40 miles in a fasted state personally.
I’m the same, black coffee is more than enough to get me through any workout, if I really badly need fuel I’ll throw some MCT in it or coconut oil.
I’m starting intermittent fasting tomorrow. Feel like I’m ready. I’ve been reading a lot about it. I’ve been following Thomas Delauer. Will be just black coffee in AM. Going to start with 16/8.
@Bill_Pratt congrats! Sounds like you are getting great results on Keto! I started IF like you at around 5 to 6 weeks. I am in week 7 and feel great. I actually didnt mean to start IF it just started itself by my appetite decreasing naturally. It has been no nice!
I used to HAVE to eat breakfast or I would get a terrible headache! Now I only eat breakfast on the weekends when I cook a pound of bacon for the week (and try not to eat it all while it’s cooking!)
Mine is natural too. The last week or 2 I have just been doing Keto coffee but I’ve felt I don’t even need it. Decided it was time. I’m ready. And it seems to have just happened. My wife isn’t ready yet so she is going to wait. I’ll keep you posted. I’m excited for it.
