Rollerblading anyone?

(Allie) #1

I’ve never done it, but it looks fun… I just don’t know if I want to commit financially to not just the rollerblades themselves, but also the recommended safety pads / helmet. Could be a fun way to get to work… oh but I just don’t know…

I did that a lot in the 90s and I loved it! I recommend all the protections too, at least at first.

Can you rent rollerblades anywhere? I used to rent rollerblades with the safety equipment in Golden Gate Park in the late 90s. That way you could try it out before buying your own.

(Allie) #4

I don’t think that’s an option at all here in the UK, but thanks for the suggestion

(Allie) #5

I used to roller-skate as a kid, many years ago, but the blades look like they’ll need more balance…

(Liz ) #6

I don’t know, I’m not the sportiest and I learned pretty quickly. I went slow, bent my knees, leaned forward with my arms out for balance, stopped by slowly rolling into grass. I bet there are starter videos on YouTube

(Garry (Canada)) #7

Go for it :sunglasses:

Just be careful.

You should!
Even roller skate again?
Appears to be great for cross training /workout
I was looking tonight get in to roller skating again too last year
Been awhile
I might re visit🤔

Then I will join the roller derby!!
Jk

Yes, the kind of activity you can enjoy!

I was an avid blader in the 90s. If you have a place with good surface, you’re set! At the time I lived in Southern California where the beach front has miles and miles of good surface… and I was in the best shape of my life (other than current 54 year old shape).

Have fun!

I think I’ll be getting myself some as a birthday present later this month :grinning:

My work is only three miles from home… I could end up commuting on rollerblades

(Pete A) #11

Commuter-blader would be awesome. And you’d get to upgrade your activity level (when choosing macros) to Moderately Active, if you’re not already… “A lightly active day job with physical labor or scheduled exercise (i.e. riding your bike to work or lifting a few times a week)”

(Allie) #12

I think it’d move me up to the “extremely active” category Pete as I already walk about 8 - 10 miles a day, lift weights 4 or 5 times a week, and do yoga and rebounding almost every day :grinning:

(Pete A) #13

I didn’t know this and YES! I didn’t at all mean to imply you weren’t active, I just know a number of Ketoers aren’t… It damn well sounds like you are haha 8-10 miles a day? :hugs: Applause.

(Pete A) #14

Very motivating, thank you.

I used to love roller skating! Probably skated 250,000 miles! I did try rollerblading but never got the hang of doing the blade thing vs. 8 wheels. Never could ice skate either. It’s a very different animal. Maybe you can find a used pair on Ebay to see if you like them before a big cash outlay. Or you could go back to skates. Be a trend setter!

(Jay Patten) #16

Awe, now I miss the 90’s :frowning:

But heck yeah roller blading is super fun.

(Allie) #17

OK I promise to share embarrassing videos of me falling over when I first attempt this crazy new thing…

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #18

If you can ice skate, you can rollerblade, no problem. I highly recommend the padding. Back when I used to rollerblade, I had an incident where I couldn’t stop (hadn’t yet learned to brake properly), and so had to fall down. I was extremely glad for the padding!

I gave my blades away a couple of years ago, after a bicycling accident that broke both my arms pretty badly. Don’t think I’ll be taking that kind of risk again, at my age—my left arm still doesn’t work properly, and may never fully heal the way I’d like it to. So be careful, and good luck!

(Allie) #19

Thanks @PaulL  I have ice skated in the past, as a child under ten! Couldn’t manage turning, but was OK in a straight line…

Practice balance and strengthen your ankles on carpet you can do it while watching tv
