Reversal of Diabetic Nephropathy by a Ketogenic Diet

(Richard Morris) #1

These studies demonstrate that diabetic nephropathy can be reversed by a relatively simple dietary intervention … in mice.

Does anyone know what the consumed normal range of protein grams to kg body weight ratio difference is between humans and mice? To put this study’s conclusion in perspective.

I would imagine .6-.9 grams/lean body mass would be good. (that is determine what % of your body mass is fat and subtract from total mass =lean weight) For most animal protein a small deck of cards size

I am just ball parking as those mice only ate 8% total calories from protein so perhaps the gram/kG should be even lower I know its hard to say. Perhaps start at .6 and test FBG and reduce by .1 every 4 weeks until FBG is at a optimal level.

Don’t know how it works for mice, but we advise pet rat owners to feed their adult rats 15-16% protein, and under 10% fat (preferably 5%). Since an adult rat consumes 5 or 6 grams of food a day per kilo of body mass (according to the Rat Guide), that works out to between 0.75-0.96 g/kg of whole-body weight. I don’t know how you would go about measuring a rat’s lean body mass.

I would like to feed my rats a ketogenic diet to prolong their lifespans, but the only ketogenic rat food I know of is formulated with Crisco oil, and I don’t like the sound of that.
