Rebel Ice Cream?

(Aaron Bieniek) #1

Morning everyone. Does anyone have any n=1 experiences with Rebel Ice Cream? I’m curious how it effects you. If you don’t have any experience with it, I’m curious what you think of the ingredients and how they calculate the net carbs per pint.

(Tom Seest) #2

I just had an identical pint about 1/2 hour ago.

Here is my track from my Dexcom CGM

As usual, individual results may vary…

I believe they discuss the carbohydrate content and how they calculate it on their Web site. From the nutrition label, it is still not something you could eat in quantity and expect to remain in ketosis.

(Mame) #4

I like it, doesn’t throw me out of ketosis but I only have a sixth or less of pint at a time…

I like that they don’t strip the fat out.

(Aaron Bieniek) #5

Thanks. Is that saying that after 30 minutes you had no rise in blood sugar, and thus no insulin response?

(Bacon is a many-splendoured thing) #6

Actually, an insulin response from a non-sugar sweetener would be indicated by a noticeable drop in blood sugar, since such sweeteners are not legal for sale in the U.S. if they raise glucose levels. The FDA requires experimental data showing no effect on glucose before it will approve such a sweetener.

(Tom Seest) #7

Also, in my case right now, I believe I’m very insulin sensitive. My insulin seems to clear blood glucose very rapidly right now.

That’s why I said individual results may vary.

I believe other individuals could have a completely different response to the same pint of ice cream.

It is a product that I would buy once in a while if they had it at my local Walmart but they don’t have it here in Canada I guess yet!

(Aaron Bieniek) #9

Thanks. In the absence of a CGM, is there any advice you can give me for running a little experiment on myself to see the effects? How would you do that?

(Jennibc) #10

My experience is that I did not like it. So I didn’t eat enough of it or long enough to be able to say what it did to me metabolically. I found it sickeningly sweet… of course you didn’t ask about that, but just thought I’d add something to the conversation about the brand.

(Tom Seest) #11

You could do a blood reading via a normal meter a half hour before, then right before, then a half hour after, then an hour after…

They apparently don’t have the resources to cope with shipping across a national border, and they haven’t yet found a supplier in Canada who could manufacture to their specifications. Last time I read anything about it, anyway. Austin was on the Ketowoman podcast last year, and he talks about their operation at one point during the podcast.

I believe that there is a tricky balance between making it sweet enough for carb-burners and not too sweet for those of us on keto . . .

(Susan) #13

Oh, okay thanks for the information, Paul =). If they do have some in the future, I will buy some to try for sure =).

I found my local Publix had it in stock, so I just had my first pint last weekend. More precisely, half on Friday and half on Saturday.

I’m pretty sure the disagreement between the front label saying 6g/pint and the FDA-mandated panel saying 48 g total carb is from the sugar alcohols. Erythtritol has been shown to pass through the body largely untouched. The measured data says about 1/5 metabolized (I’ve seen sources say 1/10 used), which changes that 8g to 1.6g per serving and 4 servings per container gets you to 6.4 g net carbs per pint. The 6 they claim is pretty well in line with measured data.

I was lazy; I didn’t measure my blood sugar. I figured I have erythritol regularly and it doesn’t affect me, so I didn’t need to. That was lazy, though. I need to go buy a case and really study it thoroughly. In the interest of science. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

(Full Metal KETO AF) #15

Okay, I don’t get the label. 12g total carbs per serving minus 3g fiber and 8g sugar alcohol = 1g carbohydrate per serving and a 4 serving carton has 6 net carbs?

Also @PaulL can you go into any detail about banned sweeteners in the US? I haven’t ever heard that. Many sweeteners are half way as carby as sugar. Maybe I am not getting what you’re talking about.

For me personally I would not purchase any commercial ice cream products because I found the most delicious and satisfying simple keto ice cream recipe you can make without a churn, sweeten it to taste with whatever you like and flavour it anyway you like. I have played with the recipe a bit. Much cheaper than buying ice cream too. Give it a go and see what you think. You just mix the ingredients in a bowl, put it in the freezer and whip it up a periodically with a spoon as it freezes.

My guess is this is a rounding issue. Probably each serving has just less than 1.5 net carbs (rounding down to 1 net carb) per serving. When this is multiplied by 4 servings, it would round to 6 net carbs per serving.

About once a month I buy a pint as a movie treat. I eat the whole thing, it’s also my dinner on those evenings. It doesn’t kick me out of ketosis, it doesn’t seem to affect my blood glucose the next morning. And, at least twice, I have lost several pounds the next day! Just sayin’.

I don’t find it very sweet at all. I find the flavors to be more subtle than strong, but more complex. I like the Butter Pecan the best (right now), I also enjoy the Mint Chip and Peanut Butter Fudge. The Cookie Dough was good, but I’d probably only buy it if they were out of those other three. I thought the Strawberry didn’t taste like anything at all. As I recall (without consulting a list of their current flavors), I haven’t tried the Coffee Chip (or something with a similar name), or other flavors. I’d probably only buy the vanilla to use as a base for a homemade berry shake of some sort.

I’m eagerly awaiting for the 6 newest flavors to show up at Harmon’s here in Utah. Although Rebel Creamery is based in Heber, Utah; I believe they manufacture in Arizona or Texas. Last time it took 4 to 6 weeks before the new flavors showed up locally.

They have new flavors that I can’t wait to try:
-salted caramel
-cookies n cream
-cherry chip
-black raspberry
-triple chocolate
-coconut almond swirl

Perhaps I phrased myself a bit too dramatically. I don’t know of any that have been banned, except sodium cyclamate (because of concerns about cancer), and that ban was eventually rescinded.

What I meant to say is that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration requires proof that a given non-sugar sweetener does not raise serum glucose before it may legally be sold in the U.S. The rationale is that this will make such a sweetener safe for diabetics to use. I have never heard of any sweetener’s being denied approval on the grounds of raising glucose, probably because any substance that did so would not even make it into the approval process. That’s not to say there haven’t been any, only that I haven’t heard of it.

About once every other month, I do the same with Breyers Carb Smart ice cream. I don’t really crave it, just an occasional treat. This does, as all things nowadays do, taste a bit sweeter than I remember.
I have had pretty intense workout beginnings the next morning as well. And it never kicked me out of keto… and hasn’t made me feel like dookie the next day either. Not yet at least.
