I’ve been kept-adapted for 5 months. Tremendous improvement in:
mood, sleep, anti-inflammatory issues, cystic acne, less anxiety, more stamina at the gym, and overall better functioning. My motivation - mother had Alzheimers in 50’s, and I was getting menopausal symptoms (cranky, sleep problems, etc) Age 61, height 5’6" weight 143.Testing glucose averaging in 80-90’s and ketones range .6 to 2.1 Want to drop ten lbs - my BMI was measured at the gym and it’s now 30. I want to eat more protein but it would reduce my ketone levels. Any thoughts?? Just eating too much fat!
Question! On Keto I rarely get hungry -- but do other people never feel full?
Sounds like you’re doing great. Only way you’ll know if more protein will help or hinder is to try it and see.
Thank you! Very sensible answer
Just concerned because BMI went up on keto - but otherwise no complaints!
BMI isn’t the best measurement as it doesn’t factor in muscle mass and it’s quite likely that’s where the change came from
Hi Linda: in the 5 months you’re keto-adapted, have you lost weight? I’m wondering why your BMI is up, unless you actually gained.
My weight is the same as it was when I started.
BMI was done at the gym with one of those hand held devices that you squeeze. Trainer did note that the age limit was 60 and I’m 61–Ha!
If your macros are broken out effectively daily I don’t know why you’d remain the same weight after six months. Hard to say without knowing what you eat in a typical day. I’d suspect a need to up your fat, but that’s always my answer haha
I plugged in your height/weight into a BMI calculator and it reads 23.08, considered healthy…?
Was bodyfat percent measured or bmi? Bmi is calculared with height and weight.
Both body fat and BMI measuring device that is hand held from Best Buy – Perhaps I’m getting to hung up on these numbers –
I think I eat too many calories - lots of fat - and I just never get full - so maybe need to exercise some discipline!! Ha
I follow Stephanie Persons and she is so lean and cut and eats over 200 grams of fat!!
Here is a similar post I just made in reference to your “hungry & full” question!
4oz. to 3oz. of protein per meal is usually the standard for Ketosis any more than that can possibly (different theories) turn to sugar reducing ketone levels, but exercise, weight, body fat and muscle mass could be taken into consideration also?
Higher ketones does not necessarily mean you will burn more body fat, it is usually the opposite! Relying on higher ketone numbers are a poor tool to measure burning (oxidation) of your own body fat because you also have to factor in dietary fat burning, it simply indicates ketones are their and at what PH your blood is?
Kind of have to see how your body responds to different adjustments between fat, protein and level of physical exertion?
Thank you Bunny!
Macros, right? Being more specific to the guidelines of Keto!
I have found that being in ketoses has distorted the usual cues for hunger and satiation - it’s odd! I rarely feel hungry (I just like all the foods on this program) nor do I really every feel full - so sometimes I have a hard time stopping eating because my best responds differently. I suspect that’s why so many people can fast easily, but I rarely hear people talk about eating too much.
Stephanie Persons is not so popular around here with many complaining that she sets overly strict rules (there are ‘no rules in keto’), and offers an unachievable goal state for most so many just come away feeling inadequate.
Remember, lean, cut, super strong people are the abnormalities not the norms. You can maybe get there with supreme effort and commitment but why bother? You should aim to be healthy with a great quality of life not look like a freak that has never really existed in human history… as much as it seems awesome now, it probably won’t make you happy and will dominate your life.
HA! Love it!
That’s the best advice ever!
Thanks for the tip on S.Persons - she is very strict! and at times preachy - But the basics:
Sleep, good quality foods, no caffeine, reduce stress are all good. The restrictions on dairy, nuts, coffee etc are tough.
Yes they are… but you can get that advice anywhere without the side orders of preaching and impacts on self esteem. Plus many would say the caffeine, dairy and nuts restrictions are total BS. Remember what works for her is just for her. You need to experiment to work out what what works for you!
