Question on fasting

(Daniel the maniel) #1

Good day all,

Im on week 3 of keto, im 36, i started the diet after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, im 5’9", and i weigh 296 (started at 307.

My question is, if i eat at 5pm, sleep for 7hrs, have a cup of coffee with 2T heavy cream, and wait to eat until 11am to eat breakfast/ lunch, can i consider this fasting? I feel hungry for sure, and the heavy cream is because i take 500mg of metformin in the am.

Thanks,

Sure you can. I would call that a loose intermittent fast (IF). Depending on what you are trying to achieve, it could be very effective. Cream in the middle of the “fast” makes this a loose fast, but as it is mostly fat, I think it would not be too intrusive on your fast if your main goal is to manage insulin. I would say go for it, and see what results you get.

I hope you have talked your fasting through with your dr, as they may need to change your meds.
Cheers

I personally wouldn’t call that a fast, but it doesn’t matter. If it works for you then it works. Keep in mind being newer to this it probably won’t be long before you have to start throttling back on your metformin, be ready for it because you don’t want to go low. I’ve noticed many peoples Dr’s or diabetic coaches don’t talk to people about self adjusting metformin or even insulin which is scary. With me and the wife we were both told doing any LCHF we should be ready to back off if we felt we were low which SHOULD be obvious to anybody taking something that lowers blood sugar but apparently not. Now we only take it when we know our meal is really gonna push it for us, no need anymore otherwise. Comes quicker than you think but everybodys different.

Thanks for quick response.

My Dr. Is the worst! When he told me my A1C results, i asked how often i should check my blood sugar. He told me i didn’t have to. I mean come on man, are you kidding me! The idea was to start the metformin at 500mg and then go up to 1000mg, but i check my suger level every am (as well as ketones) and i haven’t gone above 121. I reached out to a nutritionist yesterday and i plan on going to them to discuss.

I wont change meds without talking to my Dr. First.

You are doing the right thing in fasting and Keto diet. If your dr doesn’t get it, get a new dr. T2D is serious, and if your dr doesn’t want to understand the latest science it’s time to trade him in.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I fully agree.

Thanks

Hi Daniel. :slightly_smiling_face: Type 2 diagnosis is what got me going, too. I’m sure that was a very good thing, rather than continuing decades of being pre-diabetic…

Yes, it’s definitely fasting - it’s intermittent fasting with an eating window some hours long, from when you have the cream through when your meal is.

You’ve made a very beneficial change. You’re already getting health benefits from it. Plenty of time to figure out what all works for you.

These forums are wonderful for support and fellow humans who get you. I found that reading Dr Jason Fung’s The Obesity Code is helpful understanding how drugs like metformin work, (or don’t in the long run).
His book on fasting is also well worth the read.
The more you understand your T2D, and the doctors method of ‘treating it’ the better your consultations will be the doc. If you find the doc is undermining your desire to change your food intake to help reverse your T2D symptoms, then it is time to look for a new doctor.
I am lucky, my doctor, said ‘ yeah, go for it, I have heard a lot of good stuff about Keto…’ but I get that I am one of the lucky ones.

Best wishes

Thanks for the input.

I definitely think it’s time to find a new Dr.

I haven’t got it yet but fung’s book the diabetes code is out now. Might be worth buying.
