Question from stranger: Are you doing keto?!?

Just got back from a work lunch that was scheduled at a local coffee shop that serves Middle Eastern food. I used to go there long before keto and get vanilla lattes and baklava (sigh). I wasn’t sure if there would be anything I could eat, but I found a Greek salad with gyro meat. I ordered extra chicken with it, hold the pita bread. The guy working there asked if I was on keto and shared he’s been doing it for four months. He’s been to culinary school and loves cooking keto foods, has lost 20 pounds. “I’ve never felt better!” he said. I don’t know anyone IRL doing keto besides my husband. It was fun to get to connect with a random stranger about it.

Have you been asked by a stranger about keto? What did you eat or do that made them think you’re on it?

What a great encounter. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I was at a meeting at a steak house just the other night. I ordered a Ribeye, side salad (hold the croutons!!) And when the server started naming sides “Fries, mashed potatoes, rice…” I said “Can I just have sauteed mushrooms, please?” Someone at my table said "Jeez, are you doing Ketonor something ?" I replied "Yes, I am!!"

Yes, hold the croutons or hold the bun are usually dead giveaways. When I order I burger, I usually also ask for extra mayo and pickles. I often get a quizzical look as if to say – but I thought you were trying to be healthy!

I wanted to tell a woman I know about this fantastic new way of eating- and she knew more about it than I did. She told me her whole office is doing keto. She had to give a cocktail party and think about what to prepare for her keto guests!! She told me that this man she knew went keto for 3 months and then suddenly lost all this weight. I could never find out if it was a “whoosh” effect or if he started in on IF. i am not in for 3 months yet but am hoping for a similar sudden effect. LOL
On the other hand if I mention it to people who I know are struggling with their weight, they put it off and dont believe me. They are still into their “healthy foods” and CICO and the need to exercise more. Most people still think that butter and eggs are bad for you, and foregoing bread and pasta is impossible.

That’s a great encounter! Yes I’ve had a cashier at my local wegmans ask me if I do keto and she said she was thinking about trying it. I’m not sure what exactly gave it away. Maybe all the meat and pork rinds :joy:

(Eric - The patient needs to be patient!) #7

My Wegmans couldn’t keep pork rinds in stock. Now they are overflowing. I think they are getting larger shipments.

(Lazy, Dirty Keto 😝) #8

I used to have that issue too, I think they’ve come to terms with the keto “trend” (I don’t consider it a trend) and they’re keeping more keto foods in stock :+1:t4:

And a bonus is that you can easily as him to make modifications to your order w/o feeling too weird about it, since he’ll understand

That is very cool, LizEllen =). I get asked frequently by cashiers when I am grocery shopping, and from people that have seen me (usually people that work where I shop as I am a stay at home mom so I go shopping on Friday nights normally and the same people see me weekly.

A bunch have commented on the weight I have lost so far and then ask me how, etc. The cashiers see me buying tons of bacon, butter, etc so ask me if I am on Keto directly.

Was it the 4505 ones? Mine pulled the same crap for what seemed to be months, Wegmans was the only place I found them in the larger bags, seems corrected now and with a couple extra facings of them.

Mac brand.

(Lazy, Dirty Keto 😝) #14

Yes! The Mac’s red hot :yum:

Great experience. Keep for 3+ years- no one had asked. But places we frequent have learned I don’t go for sides. Greek food is great but (this was a learning experience for me) ask your restaurant how they make gyros. I ate them for over a year before I found out they were made with wheat at my restaurant. :flushed: My protein choice now is lamb kabobs with the Greek salad, spiced cucumbers & olives.

(Susan) #17

That sounds like a very yummy meal, JB =). Congrats on your 3+ years of successful Ketoing too =).

Usually it is at a conference and at the lunch break someone will notice that my combination of foods is a bit strange looking. Or at the breakfast buffet “you sure must like bacon”. Then I drop some butter in my coffee to watch their eyes pop out.

About a year ago I was ordering lunch for my wife and I at a small country town cafe, asking for no fries, no potatoes etc and the chef asked if I was keto. She had done it in the past so was familiar with it and we had a little chat about the benefits we had.

My daughter is a waitress. One night a few weeks ago, she said she had about seven tables that told her they were following the keto diet. She was able guide them about what to order because she knows all about it from my husband and I following the diet. She said she got awesome tips that evening. :grinning:

Mr daughter was in our Wegman’s recently waiting at the deli counter and a woman standing beside her looked in her cart and asked if she was keto. The women said she had gone keto for a couple weeks and asked my daughter for some advice.

It is spreading. One damn success at a time.
