Question for IF

(Wenchie) #1

I asked that question on FB, so sorry @Daisy for the repeat :see_no_evil: But I would really like to understand this:

Today I listend to the 2KetoDudes again and got introduced to Dr. Fung. Funny guy :joy::joy: but what he said seem to make sense. However… here comes my question:

Atm I do have my BPC in the mornings when I go to work and one meal a day when I come home about 5pm. Does my morning coffee break my IF? Dr. Fung was talking about Insulin having to stay down. As the PBC is fat only I wonder if thats ok for IF or if I should try to skip that too?

(Needles to say that I loooove my BPC in the morning :joy:)

Yes it will raise your insulin. How much and the subsequent effects on fat burning sorta depends on you, we’re all different. It will certainly be minimal compared to protein or carbs. Also if BPC allows you to skip a meal then maybe it’s worthwhile. Or not.

It depends on what your goals on honestly. I am intermittent fasting now and have elected to forgo my normal breakfast of BPC to keep the fast going. I’ve switched over to tea without any added fats to maintain high levels of growth hormone. Also, Dr. Fung says that depending on the person, caffeine can also disrupt a fast, so you may want to try tea if you find that you’re not achieving the results you want while drinking coffee.

Then again, other people practice IF and continue to use BPC. I think it must depend on the person. I’m finding that I’m getting better results without it personally. It’s also a good exercise in willpower and discipline

Well… the “or not” makes me wonder how to take this reply, but I will try to explain myself better.
I am on this in my 3rd month now and lost more than 30 pounds so far. I am
doing this with my partner @Groversaurus who went Keto over 6 months ago. Both of us have been wondering and searching for what I have asked.
As reading many books and listen to the podcasts whenever I can I try to do whats best for my health, therefore started fasting and IF as an addition to Keto.
From what I thought I had learned fat will not raise insulin. So could you please explain to me, how BPC raises Insulin? I might have misunderstood and would like to understand better.
Also I am very aware of people being unique and what goes for one person dosn’t go for the other. N=1… fair enough, but obviously we came to some conclusions that work for most of us.
As I heard Carl from the 2KetoDudes and others sticking to BPC in the morning and just eating once a day I thought this is, how IF can work. So I am simply curious if for my health skipping this BPC in the mornings would be more beneficial… or not.

Thank you for that nice reply

So its the caffein that causes the trouble? So just eating like a bit of fat would help?

I agree to the willpower  I have been going days without it but felt somehow more hungry and snackish later.

I will try tea and see how it works. Thank you

And yes, we read both- with or without BPC, thats why I was curious to hear some wisdom here

Not at all. Glad to see you using the forum. Makes me happy.

It’s not just the caffeine, although too much of it can cause a reaction that breaks up fasting. The reason the fat disrupts the fast is because you are still providing your body with outside sourced nutrients even if the fat doesn’t produce an insulin response. If you’re doing the fast for weight loss purposes, I would recommend ditching the BPC (even though it is soooo good) and relying on your own fat stores for energy. You’ll still be in fat burning mode either way, but without the extra fat you use up the stored energy in your adipose tissue.

Of course not everyone is fasting for weight loss–there are tons of other benefits to it as well. Good luck! Report back if things go well

We just don’t have enough good human studies yet to know for sure which benefits of fasting that BPC preserves vs. which ones are interrupted. Insulin may be secreted just from having your stomach stretched, which could also occur from just water or broth.
BPC will definitely cause less of an insulin response than a meal containing protein and carbs, so you’re going to be running lower for longer than people eating a standard breakfast.
Calorie-wise, depending on how you dose your cup and how many cups you consume, you may find it still contributes to weight-loss goals because of the effect on satiety throughout the morning i.e. you may consume less calories overall in a day while not feeling restricted (this can contribute to long term adherence/compliance with the plan).

Hiya! In some cases, coffee can spike insulin. Fat still does, but barely as I understand it.
My comment for you, is, depending on how you are feeling with fasting, drop the bpc one fast, see how it goes that day. There’s always tomorrow. I know Dr Fung has said numerous times “whatever gets you through the current fast”.
I’m doing a week long fast at the moment. I have been practicing fasting for over two years now. I have yet to do a water-only fast (bar one day fasts). I have chicken broth at dinner time, sometimes a bottle of Kombucha… it gets me there. I have BAD insulin resistance, so longer fasts are definitely worth it for me. I know I will do a water only fast at some point, but am proud to achieve what I am with minimal calories going in, knowing it’s pulling my insulin down, which will make it easier in time.
All this waffle to say, progress, not perfection, as Megan says!
