Protein Pump Inhibitor Interaction?

(linda dancy) #1

I am in ketosis and doing fine on my diet. Yesterday, my doctor prescribed a protein pump inhibitor for my acid reflux (which, by the way, is much better on this diet.) I have been told by others that taking the drug might throw me out of ketosis because the body needs acid for the metabolic process that causes ketosis. I would like to take the drug because an endoscopic exam found damage to the linings that need to heal. Will a timed release protein pump inhibitor, specifically Pantoprazole 40 mg., interfere with ketosis?

I take a PPI (Pariet) and have no problems with ketosis/ketogenic diet. I did try to wean myself off last month which is one of the problems of PPI’s (once on - hard to get off), but was able to reduce it by half to date.

Linda, I am sorry but I don’t know the answer to your specific question. I do however feel really strongly about the use of these types of meds. It seems to me that they are treating a symptom and what really needs to be done is correct the reason for the reflux (GERD). Using the meds only perpetuates the symptoms.

It is often a case of low stomach acid. There is some good evidence that corrections can be made without the use of meds. I cured mine and that was almost 8 yrs. ago and have had no relapse.

I take a PPI (Nexium 40mg) and it has not kept me from going into ketosis.

Apple cider vinegar is cheaper and more effective from my experience.

Hi Kathy,

I agree with many of your points. Actually, I am married to a chiropractor who is a proponent of meds only if extremely necessary I have been handling it with apple cider vinegar and at some times bicarbonate of soda for years. Just yesterday I had an endoscopy which found specific damage from an over acid condition to my throat, so I know the problem specifically. I have agreed to the Rx treatment for a limited period to help the passages to heal. It will not be a long-term thing.

I am really glad I found this thread. I have just started with a PPI recently and have really enjoyed the immense relief to my GERD. I did try ACV before-however found it always gave me heartburn. I would like to get off the PPI in the future, but want the time to heal first.

I usually take a tea spoon of baking soda mixed with 8 oz of water. Clears it up carb free and no chemicals. Only problem is it tastes terrible so it’s best to drink it fast.
