Protein newb question

(Theresa Douglas) #1

Hi all. My name is Theresa. I am currently eating a Ketogenic diet and started about 3 weeks ago. It’s been pretty smooth so far. A question though… I purchased a book that states 1.2-1.7 grams of protein per kilo per day for a person of my weight. I am 243 pounds, currently. That would mean 4.4 ounces of protein per day? That can’t be right, can it?

I have eaten much more that that the past 3 weeks and have dropped 7 pounds so far. Yes, I think that is probably water/glycogen leaving. Any thoughts you can share will be appreciated.

Does your book say per kilo of lean body mass, or your current weight?

(Theresa Douglas) #3

It says per pound of body weight per day. No mention of lean body mass.

I think you need to read it again. Or post a pic of what your reading so we can better help. In your first post you said
1.2-1.7 grams of protein per kilo
then in your second post you said
It says per pound of body weight
. Pounds and kilos are not the same.

Definitely should have said per Kilo of body weight.

One, to be “moderately active” you need to be putting in 2 hours exercise 5+ days a week. Highly active are professional athletes. So, at sedentary and 110.5 kilos, you should be getting 88-110g of protein a day.

So you weigh about 110 kilograms, and it’s recommending, call it 1 gram of protein per kg, so yes, about 3.5-4 ounces of protein per day if you’re sedentary.

Remember, protein is not meat. In other words, a 100g serving of chicken breast is not 100g of protein, it’s about 30g.

There are differing opinions about whether protein matters, but it will reduce / impact ketone production, so I’d say a “true” keto diet limits protein unless your body says otherwise.

I definitely exercise 2 hours a day by walking my 7 dogs at a breathy pace. I normally cover 6 miles per day.

What is your lean body mass?

(Empress of the Unexpected) #11

Wow. Two hours a day is “moderate?” Does walking count!

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #12

That’s right, because 4.4 oz. of protein is a little over a pound of meat.

(Lonnie Hedley) #13

People drastically over estimate their activity level. Like I said, highly active are professional athletes. People spending 8+ hours a day exercising. If you think walking a little bit is moderate, then sure. I would disagree but I’m not the boss of you.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #14

So walking briskly or hiking two hours a day doesn’t even constitute moderate?

(Empress of the Unexpected) #15

https://www.livestrong.com/article/401892-what-are-sedentary-moderate-high-activity-exercise-levels/ This is more what I consider sedentary, moderate. Where are you finding the definition?

(Lonnie Hedley) #16

If you think what you do is one step lower than Lebron, then sure. Maybe not realistic, but if you feel you’re only one step below a professional athlete, then yes you’re moderately active.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #17

I didn’t say that. I get in probably more exercise than a good deal of “sedentary” Americans. If I am sedentary at two hours a day plus weights, then I think we need to add a new category for everyone else - “comatose.”:rofl::rofl:

(Theresa Douglas) #18

Um, what? 4.4 ounces is a little more that a quarter of a pound. There are 16 ounces in a pound.

(Theresa Douglas) #19

Am I missing something here?

(Lonnie Hedley) #20

Yes. Of protein. Sounds like you think “meat = protein” which is not correct. Read what @kib said
