Protein/Fat

(Dee Nice) #1

Ok again I have a question. Today I kept a log of EVERYTHING I ate or cooked with. I had 24g carbs out of 25g…good…HOWEVER, the fat total was 125g of 86g and protein was 175g of 69g. That means I was grossly over in fat & protein.

My question is was this a BAD or good thing? Please advise. Thanks

I’m assuming you’re going by an app. Why is the target calories set at 1150?

Keto is this easy (Keto for beloved noobs)

This is for Phase One - the starter phase. It’s still not complicated later, but this is the really easy to explain version which will help you no end.

  • Eat under 20g of carbs a day

  • Don’t worry about the scale

  • Eat plenty of good food - fat and protein - while adhering to 20g/carbs/day. Don’t worry too much about macros and calories EXCEPT carbs. Keep them below 20g/day. (Prioritize the protein - always start with protein in every meal, but don’t panic about it.) Your job is to get fat-adapted, so give your body the fuel you want it to use. Also, your appetite will vary - it’ll disappear, then it’ll come roaring back. Happens to most people, don’t sweat it.

  • ELECTROLYTES/SALT - KEEP THEM UP

  • Buy the meat you can afford - don’t stress about grass-fed, organic (con), etc… The worst meat is better than the best bread.

  • Fasting is a tool. Nothing more, nothing less. Works for lots, not for others. Don’t let tools tell you to use it before you’re fat-adapted and it makes sense.

  • This site has a search function (magnifying glass at the top of the page) and a newbies section - use them both, you’ll get a better variety of answers to your questions far more quickly that way. SERIOUSLY, THIS IS VERY USEFUL.[1]

That’s as difficult as it needs to be for a couple of months.

My good friend Terence (being friends with a Kiwi feels kinda dirty, but there you have it, keto makes for strange bedfellows) tells me this thing I have described above is called “dirty keto.” So yeah, do dirty keto, kids!

Yes that’s the calorie count…and it is from the carb app

#5

Those are too few calories. You’re under-eating. This isn’t a calorie-control diet, it’s a hormone-control diet. If you go by that app, you’ll constantly be under-consuming protein.

I believe if you keep your carbs low (20g net is my limit) and you eat protein and fat to satiety, then you can be successful on keto. The trick is to not stuff yourself and to not be hungry after you’re finished eating.

IMO, the amount of protein and fat we eat is best decided by our hunger. Macros aren’t stretch pants and one size does not fit all. I can understand you feeling like you need to have limitations but keto is not about restriction. It’s about healing and changing the behavior of our hormones. Being hungry does not help the process.

And for the record, I agree with @anon2571578 about this probably not being enough food. If it leaves you hungry, then it definitely is not enough.

(Dee Nice) #7

Well to be honest, I’m never hungry after I eat breakfast…

#8

I love this! and very true

(Carl Keller) #9

Oh, this makes more sense now. I assumed the 1150 calories was your total but now i see:

125g fat = 1125 cal +
175g protein= 700 cal +
25g carbs = 100 cal
for a total of 1925 cal

which seems reasonable. If you are never hungry after breakfast then don’t force a bunch of food on yourself at lunch or dinner just because the clock says “it’s time to eat”. The amount of protein does seem like a lot in relation to what I eat but I hesitate to call it too much if that’s what it takes to keep you from being hungry.

MORE PROTEIN = MORE HEALTHYNESS

(Dee Nice) #11

When I looked back at total calories it says 1947. Wow, you were close on that one, lol. Well I’m still figuring this all out. I read internet, this forum & a Keto book trying to comprehend it all. So far I’m 19lbs down in 9 weeks, but it has stayed at that amount for last 3 weeks. Not discouraged, just can’t see why it’s not going down more. This forum will help me & hubby succeed.

If your body is using fat for fuel you can eat your fat or offer the fat off your belly instead. In other words, if you tried eating less fat daily you may find you are still satisfied because your body is using your body fat.

(Dee Nice) #13

Oh, ok… I’ll try that…

#14

This will only work if they’re fat adapted. We don’t know how long they’ve been doing Keto, do we?

Edit: never mind I see now, 12 weeks.

(squirrel-kissing paper tamer) #15

She says she’s down 19 lbs in 9 weeks, doesn’t feel hungry and feels she’s going over on her fat macros. It’s sensible for her to consider giving less fat a try.

(Carl Keller) #16

Fat is approximately 9 calories while carbs and protein are about 4 calories each.

This is very sensible. It might just mean cutting out all the extra added fats that you once needed to help you adjust to this WOE. Try to cut back on things like butter, cheese, mayo and sour cream etc so that you can burn more of the fat on your belly, instead of the fat in your belly.

One of the most amazing things about being fat adapted is that your hunger and metabolism do not suffer when you are not getting the fat your body needs though eating. It can flip on the fat burning switch and everything remains stable.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #17

It is possible to gain muscle and to increase bone density, while at the same time losing fat. You may be confusing your poor little scale!

On the other hand, my scale hates me and lies at the drop of a hat. I got all excited recently because it suddenly said I was 10 lbs. lighter. But it was just messing with me, because a few days later, it suddenly said I had gained 25 lbs. If my scale wore pants, they would be on fire! :fire:

(Dee Nice) #18

Oh, I guess I should quit eating a pat of butter now and again like I did when I first started. I actually craved butter then. And I do eat too much sour cream. Oh, and YAAY me, I finally hit the 20 lbs lost point…now only 80 to go. Thanks for the advise on this journey to healthy living!!!

(Brian) #19

I like that line.

(Dee Nice) #20

I think I overdo it when cooking with butter. I’ll modify that. Thanks PetaMarie!
