Protein calories or fat

(Jean) #1

When choosing items there are some that the quality is better and financially greater . I am
Looking at choosing what to look for first . I am 6 ft tall and 303lbs looking to lose weight . And example are little round sausages(2) . The first has 150 calories 13 grams of fat and 6g of protein the other is better quality and 280 calories 27 g. Of fat and 8 g of protein

I have lost 2 pounds in the last two weeks and my carbs are under 15 a day, so my calories or proteins are to high or fat. Try and keep my calories under 2000. Some calculators are so much different in calories compared to others same with proteins

I mainly look at carbs.

I also ask myself how processed is all this? Is it real food or industrial produced bio-organic material.

I don’t care about how much fat or protein there is. But if it’s heavily processed or ā€œmanufactured meatā€ then they can add carbs, including sugars to pad it all out. For example burger patties can fall victim to this.

I don’t count calories (just make sure I’m not insanely low or high). Carbs are the key

KCKO.

I am incredibly new to this so, take my advice with a grain of salt but, I would opt for the one with less sugar. If there is no difference in sugar, I have found that it is much easier for me to meet my targets if the fat/protein content is closer vs. something like the second option you listed. But, that is just me personally.

I have done quite a bit of reading on various topics here & I think it is better to exceed on your fat intake rather than protein. Hopefully a veteran Ketoer will be kind enough to correct me if I am wrong.

Do you have an App, or are you using an online calculator? I use Cronometer & it has come in pretty handy.

Might be good to stay away from non-whole foods.
Sausage can be anything, including artificial things for taste.
Notice that a ribeye steak is just a steak - a whole food.
Ground beef, ground pork are still whole foods too.

Sausages might have binders, fillers (to keep texture and shape) and preservatives (for a high shelf life).

Unless your butcher is grinding healthy meat, not adding anything but a spice or two and selling you sausage - probably not good. Anything canned or that has a multi-month shelf life is suspect.

Here’s what worked for me:

Prioritize high fat foods over high protein foods.

I was a big guy too at 255lb and 5’10ā€ā€¦ protein made me hungry … only fat satisfied me.

High protein is Atkins and has its own complications over time. Metabolizing high protein can be hard on the digestive system.

High fat also doesn’t mean any fat is ok. All fats are not created equal. So fried foods are not all good because they’re usually fried in corn or canola ā€˜seed’ oils that are inflammatory. I found that most dairy fats are also inflammatory, so many cheeses didn’t work for me.

Olive oil, coconut and avocado oil, mayo, butter and ghee and saturated animal fats all worked for me. Avocados macadamia also worked. Meats are good but salmon and fatty fish work well.

So chicken didn’t work for me unless it’s rotisserie and I eat the skin for the fat. Eggs are awesome, especially the fatty yolk. Sometimes, I’d eat the yolk and toss the whites to reduce my protein. ā€œLean meatsā€ like chicken breast made me hungry. I like my meat fatty or smothered in fat.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #8

I’d go with the second brand. It has less carbohydrate (1 g, as opposed to 2).

I would base my decision on how many carbs the sausages have in them and then read the label to see if the ingredients include sugar. Many sausages do include sugar and I won’t buy them.

Generally speaking, I go after meats that are on sale but the deal is off if I spy a lot of added ingredients. It’s pretty easy to find reasonably priced whole foods if you are willing to look in more than one place. I was paying $1.49 a pound for chicken legs at Giant Eagle (supermarket) until I recently discovered Aldi has them for 79 cents a pound.

I don’t buy sausages anymore because I could find sausages that had natural casings but none that were 100 meat with no add ins, too many hidden carbs.
I buy food that is not canned and is processed as little as possible cause less chance of add ins.
