Problems sleeping

#1

I have had problems sleeping, since going keto. Now, I have struggled with insomnia for years, but it feels worse than usual. What do you suggest me to do? I have been keto for around 6 weeks and I am fat adapted, I think. I know it’s a bad idea to sleep too little… In the same period it’s also got very hot in France, so it could be it’s the heat too. I fall asleep easily, but I wake up in the night or at dawn and then stay awake for hours before being able to sleep again.

My sleep is much worse in keto. Too much energy??

I had a lot of insomnia before starting keto. Now in my 5th week, I find that in general I sleep a lot better at night. In fact, whatever position I fall asleep in is the position I wake up in. If it’s hot (I don’t have AC), then I don’t sleep well. maybe make sure you are eating at least 3 hours before bedtime. Sometimes eating too close to bedtime keeps you awake.

Yea I def do not sleep as much on Keto as when I wasn’t on BUT doesn’t seem to bother me in that I have more energy now than before (no need for several coffee’s while working night shift like before).

I think like a lot of thinks that I have realized from before things just run more efficiently now.

How are your electrolytes? Magnesium before bed might help…

My sleep has also gotten massively worse in the past year, and I’ve been low carb for 2 years. Never considered it might have to do with diet. Anyone have any thoughts?

Sleep has gotten better!

For me, once I stopped eating late or snacking like w ( pre KETO )
That’s when my sleep improved
Less stress, less anxiety, and less depression
It was gradual, now if my beauty sleep😄 gets interrupted. I go back to sleep

…So w pre KETO , I would just stay awake and my mind would wonder , and count how many donuts :doughnut: will be freshly stocked at Sunny’s donuts in the morning, by rows, behind each glass display . I would count backwards to try to go back to sleep :joy::rofl:

NOW , I NEVER eat past 630. NOPE
Sure, ACV, occasional coffee, maybe tea. But no food
I Still sleep way better

Worked/works for me
No late Food= Better Sleep

I was having trouble falling asleep. Got some Magnesium pills taking one at night and that helped.

Thank you for the idea of taking the magnesium at night, instead of in the morning, tonight I will see if it helps

  1. Completely dark room with black out curtains (I can’t see my hand in front of my face)
  2. Completely quiet or white noise if your neighborhood is noisy
  3. Cool room: take a cold shower before bed in the summer and don’t crank the thermostat up in the winter, use more blankets.
  4. Avoid drinking/eating/bright screens a few hours before bed. Read a paper book. If you can’t sleep just read until you’re tired. Don’t roll in bed.
  5. Exercise hard in the morning and get sunshine on your face.
  6. Wake up at the same time everyday (early) and try going to bed later, you may just need less sleep.
There are lots of other good sleep hygiene tips online.

I am total insomniac, always wired or tired. First three weeks sleep pattern got worse before it got better, I was concerned that the keto diet would make my adrenal fatigue worse but a mixture of Taurine supplement, mass doses of B Vitamins and Magnesium and the channeling of excess energy into exercise (keto seems to have given my muscles the energy they were missing before) and I have had at least fourteen nights of decent sleep. It has been trial and error for me over last ten years with insomnia, I hope you find something that works for you, good luck x
