Potato or no potato?

(Wendy) #1

Tonight we are having a beef pot roast and my family made baked potatoes. They sound really good tonight.
What would you tell yourself, what would you advise me? Should I allow myself a half a potato with buttter and sour cream, or skip it.
I’ve not had a lot of carbs today but did have a small salad with a few tomatoes and a small square of dark chocolate (5 grams carbs).
I seem to be able to handle at least 50 carbs a day with no real issues.
To indulge or not to indulge, this is the question.
Keep it light. I know it’s not a life or death decision and I will probably do what I want to do. But it wouldn’t be the first time I changed my mind either. :yum:

One potato two potato NO POTATOES!

To me, potatoes aren’t much different than noodles or rice…just a delivery method for the good stuff (butter, cheese, etc). So I probably wouldn’t…would rather “spend” my carb quota on something else.

But then, you’ve already said you can handle up to about 5 carbs/day, so if you really want it, eat it! It’s not like you’re wanting some nasty, processed, super sugary thing.

I wouldn’t but then I’m not wild about spuds. If you really love them & aren’t prone to falling face first into all the spuds then 1/2 of one once in a while is no big thing :slightly_smiling_face:

No.

(Wendy) #6

Too late but thanks for trying.

(Wendy) #7

Yeah I ate it. But I’m satisfied. I don’t want anymore.
How about the apple pie?
Just kidding. No pie here.

:joy::joy::joy:

Just a half then.

After I cut out sugar, potatoes became my favorite food. They’re just so versatile! Going keto I thought I would really miss them, but it’s strange…I haven’t missed them at all! Even when I went off the rails from thanksgiving to Christmas, I think I ate a handful of potato chips one time and they just didn’t taste as good as I remembered! My daughter brought home some teeny tiny adorable little sweet potatoes from school last week. I gave most of them away, but kept a couple. I don’t know if I’ll actually eat any of them or not. Time will tell lol

What I would tell myself:

Hell no I hate potatoes, always have!

Now, bread or cake I might have to think about. . . .

(Wendy) #12

Yeah we all have things we hate. Those are easy to avoid. I hate beets. That’s about all I hate though.
Interesting that French fries haven’t really tempted me at all. Just the baked potato once in a while. I think I’ve had maybe 4 maybe fewer since I’ve changed my diet.

Quick question: what do potatoes taste like? Honest answer? Nothing.

They are tuber filler for other things. This is why cauliflower makes a great potato substitute.

Like Jim Gaffigan jokes;

Bacon bits are the fairy dust of the food community. You don’t want this baked potato? Sprinkle on bacon, and now it’s your favorite part of the meal.

Yea, yea, real bacon, not those phony bits, but you get the point.

Of all the carbs I “miss,” potatoes are at the very bottom.

(John) #14

Knew you were going to. The real question you should ask yourself is - why did you feel compelled to post here about it?

(Wendy) #15

Fair enough.
I eat a lot of cauliflower. Love the stuff. I don’t have any today though. And a change is nice once in a while.
No bacon today either. Sad :slightly_frowning_face:

Every day might be a problem. One small indulgence is a non-issue.

Until last night, it had been a couple of years since we went to a nice burger place. We went. We enjoyed. Awesome burger. I ate the bun. It’s not likely to happen again this year.

Things you eat every day matter way more than the occasional non-keto indulgence. FWIW, I sometimes enjoy a small potato, too.

I’m too late to weigh in but I would have said enjoy a modest serving if you can w/o triggering any binges. Some people can handle that and some can’t and only you know where you fall.

And obviously you CAN have a modest portion and be satisfied and stop at that.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #18

I vote yes. I can’t eat more than a half. It’s a fantastic butter, salt and scallion delivery system. I have maybe a half every month or so. Oh, and cream cheese.

(Wendy) #19

Well I didn’t know yet. And I do talk myself out of things all the time. But today I just really wanted it and didn’t feel like it was a big mistake.
Maybe I just needed the interaction of others who have to question whether to eat a Carby vegetable or not.
We really need to know that others get it. We need each other. Our SAD friends would just roll their eyes. Especially when you are at a healthy weight.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #20

Sorry. Meant sour cream.
