Potassium, clarity on how much?

#20

isn’t bi carb damaging to the gut bacteria?

(Duncan Kerridge) #21

I used to supplement potassium every day when I started, but these days I just do it on demand - usually if I feel a little low for no good reason - quarter teaspoon of lo-salt.

(Zu) #22

Im not sure, and at what amounts it would do so. I know I wouldn’t have it straight after a big steak as it would alkalize the gut and thus hault digestion - But I also know that it has been used very successfully as an alternitive treatment for cancer - as cancer cannot survive in an alkaline environment, it also treats the urinary tract, and helps those suffering from gout and uric acid - and Ive not heard of the side effects you mention.

The quantity I was meaning is like a pinch, along with

(Duncan Kerridge) #23

Aside from the stomach the rest of the body is alkaline, it always is. Any movement from a very tight alkaline range would kill us. An alkaline environment is the default one that cancer works in

#24

I thought the whole body ph thing was just woo woo

(Zu) #25

just one of the most basic conditions that occur from being too acidic.

It doesn’t necessarily mean ones body has entered into complete acid state, but it alkalinity is not at the most desirable level…

Just our emotions can make our bodies acid/alkaline state out of whak… Stress causes our bodies to be higher in acid then it likes, acidic food nourishes our cells with what? nothing but acidic nutrients.

I have eaten an all alkaline diet for a length of time, tested my pH, and it was alkaline, but when I wasnt eating alkaline my saliva pH was not within ideal range.

when people who have cancer, quite proteins and simple carbs they heal as they are abstaining from acid causing foods… We shouldn’t really fool ourselves into thinking mainstream science has allll the answers - many good ones, yes, but we haven’t reached the pinnacle of human understanding, nor will we ever. They are constantly saying “sorry guys we got it wrong all that time”
Ring any bells with the highcarb/low fat diet the scientists toted for decades?

People are 8 times more likely to die with chemo than without… thanks to science… yet, there are abundant success stories at the Gerson clinic who do follow theory of alkaline/acidity of the body.

Also our muscles can be acidic from lactic acid build up in the muscles…Not just our stomachs are acidic… even so, our stomach is the root of most cancers!

point of the story is bicarb good to replensih electrolytes… look it up,

Livelovefruit.com has great raw vegan recipes…

That link claims LC diets can cause acidosis. Please cite sources for this claim.

“One pound of fresh spinach will produce about 10 cups of torn raw leaves. If you only need about 1 cup of raw spinach, then you would only need to purchase 1.5 to 2 ounces. Be aware of how much spinach shrinks during cooking!”

#29

“When a recipe calls for cooked fresh spinach, 1 pound of fresh spinach will yield 10-12 cups of torn leaves, which will cook down to about 1 cup. One package (10 ounces) of frozen spinach leaves yields about 1-1/2 cups after cooking.”

#30

i don’t cook spinach. It’s not harsh like Kale. I see no need to cook it at all.

#31

I don’t cook it either, unless its sprinkled into an omelete

Interesting discussion. I’ve been mulling over potassium these days, too.

In the last year of my mom’s life, she was on a lot of meds… heart, kidney, and some other stuff, and the docs said she needed to take a potassium supplement. So they gave her some horse pills… and I can’t say that exactly went well. She was salt restricted but was allowed to use some salt. But when I asked her docs, could we use some salt-lite or some type of potassium chloride instead of some of the normal low amounts of sodium chloride, it was a resounding NO. I never quite understood that. There may be more to it than my simple mind understands.

I wondered if that could have made a difference for her. She suffered with a heart arrhythmia for years. (I also wonder if she’d have benefited from eating a diet more like keto, but I can’t go back in time to try it. Having provided a lot of her care and most of her cooking during that last year, I always wonder what my wife and I could have done better. (She passed away in April.) I know, can’t beat myself up for that one, only move forward the best I know how.)

I’m going to resurrect this thread because @Brenda expressed a concern that I might be taking in too much potassium during ZornFast. I did some double-checking, because Cronometer says I should be getting 4700mg per day, and I never come close to that. I plugged in 2.5 teaspoons of Lite salt into Cronometer, and it showed this:
image
That included 80g from my multivitamin.

Then in this thread, I read this:

I regularly eat foods rich in potassium, and drink 2 bottles of keto-aide a day when not fasting. I thought maybe I should drink more when I am fasting. Now I wonder, maybe not. So, what doctor or alchemist (aka @richard?), or maybe just a plain chemist, can tell us how jumpy we should get about taking extra potassium? Is my body storing it up? Will increased salt intake regulate how much is stored or available? I really thought I was probably low, but maybe my energy problem is actually over-consumption.

A few years ago I got heart palpitations from taking just one tablet per day for a few days. I don’t remember the tablet mg but it was a daily dose. When I read up on it, I got a little freaked out - too much potassium is pretty scary. Now when I’m on a water fast, I’ll cut one of those tablets into quarters and take one a day.

(Candy Lind) #35

There was also some discussion about potassium that is worth reading in THIS THREAD.

THIS THREAD is also worth reading, as are several others.

Also … listen to 2KD podcast episode 41 - THE SALT FIX.

The thing a lot of people don’t realize is that if you’re taking in enough salt, it enables STORAGE of potassium in your fat cells. Because of this, you can OVERDOSE on potassium if you are taking a supplement. For most of us, we don’t need anywhere NEAR what the “DV” or “RDA” or whatever the government says we need. Especially on keto! I had too much potassium in my system and it made me feel AWFUL - racing heart, weak muscles, thought I had a heart problem. I got better! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Beet greens have nearly 1200 mg of Potassium.

(Dee Ann Guzman) #37

If I don’t drink a lot of Almond milk (200 mg per cup), and take about 500 mg per day of a Potassium supplement, I get heart issues on Keto, and my BP skyrockets. My cardiologist told me he’d much rather me have too much than two little.

(Candy Lind) #38

Interesting! How much salt do you take per day?

#39

The info on potassium and salt seem to vary. I have seen nutrition specialists say it’s important to maintain potassium intake at 4 grams a day to 1 gram of salt and others say 3-4 grams of potassium and around 3 for salt. The facebook group “Optimal Ketogenic Living” revolves around getting 4 grams a day of potassium and stresses that one should not get more than a gram of salt. Phinney, Mercola, Adam Nally, etc. all say around 4 grams but much more salt too. Not sure who is right but I am sure that I need potassium - I never meet the macros for it or magnesium.
