Possible benefits for bipolar disorder from Keto
The Baszucki Group was set up because the son of the parents had bipolar and found that a ketogenic diet helped him tremendously (possibly “cured” bipolar).
They started the group and funded it because no one mentioned diet being helpful for bipolar.
The recently published book called Change Your Diet Change Your Mind by Dr Ede addresses the curative nature of KETO for a variety of psychological dx - including Bi-Polar Disorder. Her book lists the research she did with patients in a psychiatric hospital that controlled for diet and had tremendous, curative results. The book is dense but she is on you tube with various interviewing podcasts. As one might imagine- the is pushed back but she is a Harvard trained psychiatrist and comes with verified research. Groundbreaking!
The study is here:
In the discussion on the podcast, they said that people got more benefits when ketones were >2mmol/l. That’s interesting, because we normally tell people not to “chase ketones” (meaning, don’t worry about the level), but in this case, maybe you should chase ketones.
They discussed exogenous ketones to help with this, but it’d be interesting to see if there are food-based ways of achieving this. Lower carbs can help somewhat, but I can get to “zero” carbs and still not have ketones that high.
